The James Bond Movie Encyclopedia presents This Day in James Bond History - wishing a very Happy Birthday to Dutch actress Famke Janssen, who made such an indelible Impression as the wild Xenia Onatopp in GoldenEye (1995).
Some of the most memorable villains in the 007 series have been women – dating back to Lotte Lenya’s Colonel Klebb in From Russia with Love (1963), Luciana Paluzzi’s Fiona Volpe in Thunderball (1965) and Barbara Carrera’s Fatima Blush in Never Say Never Again (1983).
Rebooting the series for Pierce Brosnan’s James Bond, director Martin Campbell let Famke’s Onatopp, an ex-Soviet fighter pilot turned mercenary, run wild as a Janus agent with an unquenchable sexual appetite, a murderous demeanor and killer thighs. She gives James quite a run for his money, especially in a St. Petersburg steam room.
So let’s raise a tall glass of vodka to this siren of the screen – one of the high points of a new generation of 007 adventures.
