UPDATE: >Our review of Trigger Mortis (mild spoilers)
--------------------------
Literary legend James Bond returns to his 1950s heyday in this exhilarating thriller by Sunday Times bestselling author Anthony Horowitz.

It's 1957 and James Bond (agent 007) has only just survived his showdown with Auric Goldfinger at Fort Knox. By his side is Pussy Galore, who was with him at the end. Unknown to either of them, the USSR and the West are in a deadly struggle for technological superiority. And SMERSH is back.

The Soviet counter-intelligence agency plans to sabotage a Grand Prix race at the most dangerous track in Europe. But it's Bond who finds himself in the driving seat and events take an unexpected turn when he observes a suspicious meeting between SMERSH's driver and a sinister Korean millionaire, Jai Seong Sin. Soon Bond is pitched into an entirely different race uncovering a plan that could bring the West to its knees.

Welcoming back familiar faces, including M and Miss Moneypenny, international bestselling author Anthony Horowitz ticks all the boxes: speed, danger, strong women and fiendish villains, to reinvent the golden age of Bond in this brilliantly gripping adventure.

Trigger Mortis is the first Bond novel to feature previously unseen Ian Fleming material.

This is James Bond as Ian Fleming imagined him.

Incorporating original, never-before-published material from 007 creator Ian Fleming, New York Times bestselling author Anthony Horowitz returns literary legend James Bond to his 1950s heyday in this exhilarating and dashing thriller.

The world's most famous spy, James Bond, has just returned victorious from his showdown with Auric Goldfinger in Fort Knox. By his side is the glamorous and streetwise Pussy Galore, who played no small part in his success. As they settle down in London, the odds of Galore taming the debonair bachelor seem slim—but she herself is a creature not so easily caught.

Meanwhile, the struggle for superiority between the Soviet Union and the West is escalating. In an attempt to demonstrate Soviet strength, SMERSH plans to sabotage an international Grand Prix in the hot zone of West Germany. At the Nürburgring Racing Circuit, Bond must play a high-speed game of cat and mouse to stop them, but when he observes a secretive meeting between SMERSH's driver and a notorious Korean millionaire, it becomes clear that this is just the infamous organization's opening move.

An orphan of the Korean War, he has a personal reason for wanting to bring America to its knees. He's helping SMERSH decisively end the white-hot space race—but how? With the help of an American female agent, Bond uncovers a plan that leads first to Florida and then to New York City, where a heart-stopping face-off will determine the fate of the West.

This thriller has all the hallmarks of an original Ian Fleming adventure and features welcome familiar faces, including M and Miss Moneypenny. Horowitz delivers a smooth and seductive narrative of fast cars and beautiful women, ruthless villains and breathtaking plot that will leave readers hanging until the very end.

Comments:
'Having read all forty continuation novels, I declare Anthony Horowitz’s Bond debut to be the best of them all. Trigger Mortis positions itself within the original continuity of Ian Fleming's series a mere two weeks after the events of Goldfinger (1959). The inclusion of Pussy Galore at the start of the story echoes Fleming’s From Russia With Love (1957) where we find out the fate of Tiffany Case, and gives closure to that particular relationship. It also shows Bond a little less sharp when on home soil, something that may be his undoing before the adventure is finished. These opening events serve as a precursor to the main storyline involving SMERSH’s attempts to raise the prestige of the Soviet Union, whether it’s in the glamourous world of Grand Prix racing or the space race.

Intelligence received indicates that a famous British motor racing champion, Lancy Smith, will be the target of a SMERSH operative during the Grand Prix at Nürburgring, Germany. This section of the novel is inspired by an unpublished Fleming short-story, Murder On Wheels - also the title of Chapter (Double-0) Seven - in which Fleming places real-life motor-racing legend Stirling Moss as the target of SMERSH. James Bond is dispatched by M to stop this inventive assassination and the chapter in which Bond receives his briefing from M and Bill Tanner has Ian Fleming’s own writing seamlessly intertwined with Horowitz’s own. Bond must undergo a crash course in motor racing before taking to the wheel of a Maserati in the Grand Prix. While in Nürburg, Bond spots his Russian racing opponent, Ivan Dimitrov, in the company of Vladimir Gaspanov, a high-ranking member of SMERSH and probable successor to Colonel General Grubozaboyschikov (last seen in From Russia, With Love) and Korean businessman Sin Jai-Seong, Westernised to Jason Sin.

Having dealt with the Grand Prix, Bond meets the mysterious Jeopardy Lane in Sin’s German castle and follows a lead to the United States where he uncovers Jason Sin’s SMERSH-backed plot to discredit the American space race with a wanton attack on New York City. Sin is a totally rounded character. His motivation stems from the real-life massacre of July 1950 at No Gun Ri, South Korea, where refugees, fleeing North Korean forces, were slaughtered by a combined U.S. ground and air attack. Not exactly their finest hour. However, it is Bond’s humanity, even as a trained killer in the service of Her Majesty’s government, which separates the two men. As one would expect, Bond must endure extreme mental torture and display superior physical stamina if he is to beat the odds.

Anthony Horowitz has genuinely come closest to capturing the style of the original books. To its credit, Trigger Mortis, is shorter than the recent efforts of Messrs Sebastian Faulks, Jeffery Deaver and William Boyd which immediately gives it the pace and readability of a Fleming original. Horowitz also successfully gets inside Bond’s head (perhaps the only other author to do so was Charlie Higson). The novel feels like a 1950s-written piece, with the descriptions of the foreign villains just on the right side of acceptability for the modern reader. Moneypenny is returned to the correct characterisation, not the pseudo-film character of recent efforts, helped, no doubt, by the return of Loelia Ponsonby. At its heart Trigger Mortis is the epitome of what the originals were all about – a straight pillow fantasy of the bang-bang, kiss-kiss variety that keeps you turning the pages. I hope the recent trend of hiring a different writer for the adult Bond novels is broken and we don’t see the ‘Trigger Mortis’ button pressed on Anthony Horowitz any time soon.'

Hardback and eBook editions will be available the same day. (Oyelowo is the first black actor to play James Bond.)

OFFICIAL PRESS RELEASE: (London, August 13, 2015)

SELMA STAR READS NEW JAMES BOND AUDIOBOOK
British actor, producer, director and writer David Oyelowo is to narrate the audiobook edition of the forthcoming official James Bond novel, Trigger Mortis, by bestselling author Anthony Horowitz. He follows in the footsteps of other actors who have narrated 007 novels, including Kenneth Branagh, Hugh Bonneville, Tom Hiddleston and Rosamund Pike.

Oyelowo is known for roles in theatre, film, radio and television. He was born in Oxford in 1976 and in 2001 he appeared on stage in the title role of Henry VI in the groundbreaking Royal Shakespeare Company production. He played the character, Danny Hunter, in the popular BBC TV drama, Spooks, between 2002 and 2004. He has appeared in films such as The Last King of Scotland, Lincoln, Jack Reacher, The Butler and Selma, for which he received a Golden Globe Best Actor Award nomination for his portrayal of civil rights leader, Martin Luther King, Jr.

Oyelowo said: “I consider it a huge honour to be asked to narrate this wonderful book. Anthony Horowitz has crafted a taut thriller with a fascinating cast of characters and stunning action sequences that I am relishing bringing to life. It is an acting challenge as exciting to me as any I have faced on stage or screen. I get to play James Bond! It doesn't get much better than that.”

Horowitz said: “What an honour to have an actor as talented as David to read my take on James Bond. He has a brilliant voice and talent for bringing out the nuances of dialogue and characters. He will do marvels with the audiobook of Trigger Mortis.”
