SWEDISH BOND GIRL KRISTINA WAYBORN

A celebration of Kristina Wayborn - Miss Sweden & Miss Scandinavia 1970 and the actress who played Magda in the 1983 James Bond film Octopussy (1983), still the most successful 007 film in Sweden of all time (based on the number of cinema tickets sold).

With this page, From Sweden with Love would like to celebrate Kristina and thank her again for taking time to grace our James Bond festival in Stockholm on 19-21 September 2014.

"Älskade Kristina - många kramar på födesledagen från oss i Sverige."

About Kristina Wayborn:
Kristina Wayborn was born Britt-Inger Johansson in Nybro, Sweden. After being elected Miss Sweden in 1970 she was a semi-finalist in the Miss Universe pageant. The same year she was also elected Miss Scandinavia.

Wayborn portrayed screen legend Greta Garbo in The Silent Lovers (1980) which brought her to the attention of the producers of the James Bond films.

She was cast as Magda in the James Bond film Octopussy (1983). During a fight scene in the film, the act went wrong and Wayborn suffered several broken toes. Despite the accident, she became well known for her fight scenes in Octopussy, in an era predating the big female action heroines of the box office. Her character Magda beat up many of Kamal Khan's guards, showing a surprising agility and acumen for martial arts.

She subsequently appeared in a number of American television series such as The Love Boat (1982-1986), Airwolf (1986), MacGyver (1986), Dallas (1986), General Hospital (1987), Designing Women (1991), Baywatch (1993-1999) and That '70s Show (2000) in which she was re-united with her Octopussy co-star Maud Adams.

In the 1990's, Kristina appeared in the Swedish television series Vänner och Fiender (1996-2000), one of the longest running series ever in Sweden. (Another Swedish Bond girl, Mary Stavin, also appeared in the series.)

In 2010, she appeared in the horror film The Frankenstein Syndrome.

Editor's note:
In 2012, FSWL did a long interview with the wonderful Kristina Wayborn. The piece will be published at a later date. Check out issue 21 of MI6 Confidential for a more recent interview.

Saturday: 10am-5pm
Sunday: 11am-4pm

Confirmed James Bond girls scheduled to attend this show:
Barbara Bouchet (1967's Casino Royale)

Gloria Hendry (Live and Let Die)
Kristina Wayborn (Octopussy)
Lana Wood (Diamonds Are Forever)
Luciana Paluzzi (Thunderball (1965))
Lynn-Holly Johnson (For Your Eyes Only)
Mary Stavin (Octopussy and A View to a Kill)
Tanya Roberts (A View to a Kill)
Trina Parks (Diamonds Are Forever)

**Both Britt Ekland, Live and Let Die villain Yaphet Kotto, and Tula (For Your Eyes Only) were also scheduled to attend but sadly had to cancel their appearances.

FSWL friends Cathy St. George and Richard Herd will also be in attendance.

More about the Bond guests:
Barbara Bouchet is a German-American actress who has appeared in more than 80 films and television episodes. Barbara has also founded a production company, that has produced fitness videos and books, as well as owning a fitness studio. Among her many roles is portraying the iconic Miss Moneypenny in the 1967 version of Casino Royale opposite David Niven as 007.

Britt Ekland is a Swedish actress and singer, and a long-time resident of the United Kingdom. She is best known for her roles as a Bond girl in The Man with the Golden Gun (1974), and in the British cult horror film The Wicker Man, as well as her marriage to actor Peter Sellers, and her high-profile social life.

Carole Ashby - English actress best known for playing the part of Louise, a member of the communist resistance, in 'Allo 'Allo! (1988-1992). Previously, she appeared alongside Roger Moore in two James Bond films, Octopussy (1983) and A View to a Kill. Even lthough her appearances were brief they assured her Bond Girl status. She also played the role of Linda Boyland in the 1981 hit movie Chariots of Fire. Carole was also a hostess on the final (1983) season of Anglia Television's game show Sale Of The Century.

Gloria Hendry is an American actress. Hendry began her acting career in the 1968 Sidney Poitier film For Love of Ivy. She is of Seminole, Chinese, Creek Indian, Irish and African descent.
She is perhaps best known for portraying the Bond girl, Rosie Carver in the James Bond film Live and Let Die (1973). In that film, she became the first African American woman to become romantically involved with 007. She is not, however, the first African-American Bond girl; that title went to Trina Parks. When the film was first released in South Africa, her love scenes with Roger Moore were cut out because it was prohibited by the Apartheid government.

Kristina Wayborn - a Swedish-born actress who has worked mostly in the United Kingdom and in the United States. Wayborn portrayed screen legend Greta Garbo in television movie The Silent Lovers (1980) which brought her to the attention of the producers of the James Bond films who cast her for Octopussy.

Lana Wood is the younger sister of actress, Natalie Wood. Her first major role was at age 9 in the John Wayne western The Searchers. She was a regular on the soap opera Peyton Place. She is best known for her role as Plenty O'Toole in the 1971 James Bond film Diamonds are Forever.

Luciana Paluzzi - her very first film was an uncredited walk-on part in Three Coins in the Fountain (1954). She went on to appear in many movies, most of which were made in her native Italy. Even though Paluzzi had an extensive resume before and after her brush with Bond, audiences worldwide still remember her best as the fiery, red-haired villainess she played in Thunderball (1965) (1965). Paluzzi originally auditioned for the part of the lead Bond girl, "Domino" Palazzi. The producers eventually cast a former Miss France, Claudine Auger, because they wanted to launch a new girl with each new Bond movie and Luciana was already well established with movie audiences in Europe. Initially crestfallen when informed she did not get the part, Paluzzi rejoiced when told her consolatory prize was the part of the "bad girl", Fiona Volpe, which she said was "more fun to play".

Lynn-Holly Johnson - an American professional ice skater and actress. After achieving some success as a figure skater in the mid 1970s, she began an acting career, including a Golden Globe-nominated role in 1978's Ice Castles. In 1981, Johnson portrayed Bibi Dahl in the James Bond film For Your Eyes Only. In that movie she played yet another ice-skater who unsuccessfully yet comically attempts to seduce an unwilling and much older James Bond (played by Roger Moore).

Mary Stavin is a Swedish actress, model, and a former Miss World (1977). Born in Örebro, Sweden. She returned to judge the Miss World contest in 1981 and 2010. and hosted it in 1986.
Amongst her most prominent acting roles are parts in two James Bond films. In Octopussy she plays an Octopussy girl and in A View to a Kill she plays agent Kimberley Jones. In addition to acting, Stavin released the exercise album Shape Up and Dance with George Best. She had a minor role as the character Tanya in the 1986 horror movie House which starred William Katt. Stavin plays the Icelandic businesswoman, Heba, in "Twin Peaks" (Season 1, Ep. 6). She also appeared in two music videos for Adam Ant. These were Ant Rap (1981) and Strip (1983).

Tanya Roberts is an American actress best known for her role in as Julie Rogers on the fifth and final season of Charlie's Angels (1980-1981) and as Midge Pinciotti on That '70s Show (1998-2001). She has also headlined films such as The Beastmaster, A View to a Kill, and Sheena. Roberts was groomed as a Hollywood sex symbol during the early 1980s.

Trina Parks - an American actress, vocalist, choreographer, principal dancer and dance instructor. She is most famous for portraying Thumper in 1971's Diamonds are Forever.

Caroline 'Tula' Cossey was born with male genitalia but went on to become a beautiful woman with a successful modeling career. Tula was cast in the 1981 James Bond movie For Your Eyes Only. She is proud to be a part of the legacy of James Bond films.
Her autobiography My Story is not just the true account of Tula's battle for the body she needed to survive and her struggle for the legal rights she deserved as a woman. It is above all an inspirational exemplification of the triumph of the human spirit over seemingly insurmountable adversity and suffering. Later in 2016 Tula will be featured in an HBO documentary.

BIRDS OF THE WEST INDIES (BOND GIRLS BOOK)

Publication of Birds of the West Indies, a new book with newly taken photos of 56 James Bond girls (FSWL got the full list, see below). The book is written by Daniel Baumann and published by Hatje Cantz. Order it from Amazon.

In 1936, an ornithologist called James Bond released the definitive taxonomy of birds found in the Caribbean, titled Birds of the West Indies. Ian Fleming, an active bird watcher living in Jamaica, subsequently appropriated the name for his novel’s lead character. He found it to be perfectly “ordinary”, “brief”, “Anglo-Saxon” and “masculine”. This co-opting of names was the first replacement in a series of substitutions that would become central to the construction of the Bond narrative.

In a meticulous and comprehensive dissection of the Bond films, artist Taryn Simon inventoried women, weapons and vehicles in Bond. The contents of these categories function as essential accessories to the narrative’s myth of the seductive, powerful, and invincible western male. In Birds of the West Indies, Simon presents a visual database of interchangeable variables used in the production of fantasy, through which she examines the economic and emotional value generated by their repetition.

She was cast as Magda in the James Bond film Octopussy (1983) (1983).
