UNICEF GOODWILL AMBASSADOR SIR ROGER MOORE (1927-2017)

FSWL and the rest of the world deeply mourns the death of Sir Roger Moore (1927-2017) aged 89 after a short but brave battle with cancer which his children Deborah, Geoffrey and Christian reported in an official announcement.

Roger Moore official family announcement
Friends and colleagues remembers the wonderful human being with fellow James Bond actors Sean Connery, George Lazenby, Timothy Dalton, Pierce Brosnan and Daniel Craig leading the tributes:

Sean Connery: "I was very sad to hear of Roger’s passing. We had an unusually long relationship by Hollywood standards, that was filled with jokes and laughter, I will miss him."

Roger Moore and Sean Connery
George Lazenby: "I liked Roger, he was a genuine fellow, a really good guy."

Roger Moore with George Lazenby and Timothy Dalton
Timothy Dalton: "I knew Roger as a kind and generous man. He was a wonderfully engaging and successful actor. My thoughts are with his family."

Pierce Brosnan: "Dear Sir Roger Moore, It is indeed with a heavy heart that I hear the news of your passing this morning. You were a big part of my life, from The Saint to James Bond.. .you were a magnificent James Bond and one that lead the way for me, the world will miss you and your unique sense of humor for years to come. My sincerest condolences to your family and children. RIP"

Timothy Dalton and Pierce Brosnan with Roger Moore in London 1996
Daniel Craig: "Nobody Does It Better – love Daniel"

Roger Moore with Daniel Craig in London
James Bond producers Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli: "We are heartbroken at the news of Sir Roger Moore’s passing. On the screen, he reinvented the role of James Bond with tremendous skill, charisma and humour. In real life, he was a genuine hero working as a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador for many years dedicating his life to alleviating the suffering of children all over the world. He was a loyal and beloved friend and his legacy shall live on through his films and the millions of lives he touched. We shall miss him enormously. Our love and thoughts are with Deborah, Geoffrey, Christian his grandchildren and his wife Kristina.”

Roger Moore with Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli
Director John Glen: "Devastating Tuesday! Roger will be sadly missed. His humour was unique and we will miss his raised eyebrows greatly. He was the consummate professional, never considered himself a serious actor but was extremely professional and loved worldwide for his debonair charm. Filming with Roger was always a pleasure. I would allow an extra half an hour a day for his pranks on set which was money well spent as it kept the crew relaxed during the six months of filming. He was very instrumental to my career and I shall be eternally grateful. My thoughts go to his wife, Kristina, and family."

John Glen with Roger Moore on the set of For Your Eyes Only in Greece
Steven Saltzman (son of legendary Bond producer Harry Saltzman): "I knew him all my life, my sister and I grew up with his children Geoffrey, Deborah, and Christian".
We knew he had been sick for a while. But he was so elegant throughout this battle. He never let his humour slip. Only up to very recently he sent me jokes via email - his sense of humour was extraordinary.
He had such a beautiful character, and was always impeccably dressed, even in Monaco!
The man had three strings to his bow: his family, charity work and his craft.
We can't believe it - We are just crest-fallen. There is a huge outpouring of grief here. We are all weeping. We just miss him.
I loved this man."

Steven Saltzman and Roger Moore in Monaco
SFX maestro John Richardson: "RIP Sir Roger Moore very sad to see him leave us. He was a lovely man and will be long remembered. God Bless you Roger!"

Martin Grace (1942–2010), Sir Roger Moore's number one stunt double from 1975 to 1985, said in an interview with FSWL in 2009: "One of the few most genuine actors I have worked with. He was always a gentleman, courteous and charming to his colleagues, humorous when situations got tense and a true professional in his work. He brought suaveness to the role of James Bond and made his mark as 007."

Stuntman and stunt coordinator Paul Weston: "We have lost a true English ambassador. Sir Roger was a warm friendly gentleman, who's humour, humility and humanity had no bounds. His lifelong work for UNICEF and other charities, have been appreciated by children all over the world. I will miss his friendship that I have enjoyed since the first day I walked onto "The Saint" set in 1964 and in the 57 intervening years he never changed his funny warm friendship.
He knew the first names of all the film crews and would involve them in the many gags that he would set up to make film making fun. From all of us, God bless you Roger, rest in your well deserved peace."

Stuntman and stunt coordinator Rocky Taylor: "When I received the news of Roger's passing I was numb. I've had the pleasure of working with so many stars over the years, but Roger was special. I was with him the day he got the Bond role. I was at Pinewood with his stuntman Les Crawford when around the corner we see Roger. He called us over and said 'Boys you are looking at the new James Bond'! Well we went nuts. He very quickly told us to keep the noise down and bundles us into a dressing room. There we drank champagne and toasted his future success.
On Octopussy I was his main double in India and we had great fun out there. He was always very good to the stunt boys. I'd pulled my back one day and quick as you like he said 'Right that's it you're going to relax in my trailer', I told him that I'd be fine but he insisted and sure enough I went and convalesced in style with a glass of champagne, for medicinal purposes to hand while he went off and filmed.
I also remember his kindness after I'd had my accident in 1985 on Death Wish 3. Not long after I'd been admitted to hospital a call came through from Roger wishing me all the best for a speedy recovery. He also sent me so much fruit I could have started my own market stall.
He will always hold a very special place in my heart, and as many millions of fans around the world mourn his passing, we must be thankful that we have his incredible body of work to remember him by.
Thank you for all the good times Roger - I will always miss you."

Rocky Taylor with Roger Moore on The Man with the Golden Gun
Stuntman Terry Cade: "RIP Sir Roger. Work on four Bonds with you it was a great pleasure to have had the privilege, you're fun and a gentleman."

Stuntman and Stunt coordinator Vic Armstrong: "Very sad. Roger was one of my heroes when I first came into the business and and he epitomised everything that I thought the business should be. When I did get to work with him on a one to one basis in Greece he confirmed what a superstar and superman he was, always so complimentary to others and self demeaning about himself, he also had the greatest sense of humour and wit which to me is what gets you through the trials and tribulations of the film business. Roger will be truly missed and as they say when he went 'they broke the mould', it is the end of a legend."

Paul McCartney (theme song for Live and Let Die): "Further sad news today that Sir Roger Moore has passed away. Roger was a great man and of course a great James Bond who I was lucky to work with during the time of 'Live and Let Die'. He had a heart of gold, a great sense of humour and will be missed by the many people who loved him."

Several of the Bond women from Sir Roger's films have also paid their respect for the actor and, above all, beloved man:

Jane Seymour (Live and Let Die): "I am devastated to learn of Roger Moore’s passing. The first leading role I ever had as a Bond girl was such a new and frightening world and Roger held my hand and guided me through every process. He taught me about work ethic and humility. He was so funny, kind and thoughtful to everyone around him and in that Roger taught me what a movie star really was and should be. Through his lifelong work with UNICEF he showed me the true meaning of being a humanitarian and giving back. He was my Bond."

Britt Ekland (The Man with the Golden Gun): "My Bond is gone, am filled with great sadness. Roger was the epitome of Bond, witty, sophisticated, elegant, funny. Rip"

Britt Ekland with Roger Moore for UNICEF Canada
Maud Adams (The Man with the Golden Gun and Octopussy): "Roger was loved by all and have left us in great sadness. I am forever grateful for the fate that brought us together."

Joie Vejjajiva (The Man with the Golden Gun): "Meeting Roger Moore and working with him was a memory I'll never forget. He was such a lovely person. He never behaved as if he was above any of us, he behaved like one of us. He would joke around, sing songs with all of us after filming. I took my guitar to the film set and Roger would play it."

Joie Vejjajiva with Roger Moore on The Man with the Golden Gun
Barbara Bach (The Spy Who Loved Me): “It was a pleasure working with Roger, he was a kind and good man. A true gentleman. Peace, love and condolences to his wife and family.”

Caroline Munro (The Spy Who Loved Me): "I feel devastated about the passing of Roger Moore too Sad to take it in! He was a beautiful person with amazing wit and humour I loved him dearly and will miss him so much! A true gent in every sense of the word! RIP Roger"

Valerie Leon (The Spy Who Loved Me): "Roger Moore was an exceptional human being. I had the good fortune to work with him four times: On television in The Saint and The Persuaders and then in The Wild Geese apart from the Bond film.
The Persuaders [the Long Goodbye episode made in 1971] is the most memorable. He was not only the star but also the director. He gave me a totally unscripted kiss which so took me by surprise that I ended up with a huge grin on my face. but the editors kept it in! His daughter Deborah Moore also appeared with us. She was a little girl and I can still see see her walking along hitting some railings with a stick.
TSWLM was filmed in Sardinia. A select few of us were invited one night to dinner at the Aga Khan’s. When we arrived, we were told the staff were off for the night so Cubby Broccoli and Roger took their place and served us all… It was such fun.
Roger was my favourite Bond: a real charmer and a gentleman. He was the loveliest man and I am deeply saddened that he has now left us."

Valerie Leon and Roger Moore on The Spy Who Loved Me
Corinne Clery (Moonraker): "We have lost a great actor but above all a gentleman."

Anne Lönnberg (Moonraker): "Roger Moore was a great actor with wonderful humour and he fit the role of James Bond perfectly. He was also great to work with - serious, professional and very sweet to us unknown girls. I remember the day Roger had to be submerged in water all day long fighting with that giant python. At the end of the day he was wet, exhausted and fed-up. After the last shot, he said, 'Now, at last, I can go back to my hotel and take a hot bath!' When an assistant whispered in his ear, 'You may have forgotten, Mr. Moore, you have a press conference in ten minutes'. Roger answered, dripping wet, with a polite smile, 'Give me ten minutes.' RIP"

Béatrice Libert (Moonraker): "I am deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Sir Roger Moore and want to offer my sincere condolences to his family. My only regret is that I have not seen him since 1979..."

Irka Bochenko (Moonraker): "Dear Roger, I am so sad. My deepest and most sincere condolences to Roger's Family. An exceptional man with a remarkable kindness and generosity. WE LOVE YOU FOR EVER AND EVER!"

Anne Lonnberg and Irka Bochenko with Roger Moore
Lynn-Holly Johnson (For Your Eyes Only): "Dear Roger... you've left us behind and deeply saddened, taking with you your ultimate charisma and serene blue eyes. My sister and I will never forget your joyful smile and zest for life . You were magnetic! Rest In Peace my dear James , my one and only James Bond. Love to you beyond."

Mary Stavin (Octopussy) and A View to a Kill): "I'm shocked. He was one of the nicest people I got to know. Warm, humorous and an English gentleman throughout his fingertips.
There are actually no words that can describe him. It was a pleasure to work with him as everyone loved him. Even though he was the star he could ask if he could pick up coffee or help with anything else.
He could call just to ask how I was, or congratulate on a birthday. Only a warm and thoughtful person do things like that."

Mary Stavin and Roger Moore in A View to a Kill
Kristina Wayborn (Octopussy): "I have cried a lot today. My father passed last year and he also became 89 years old. Hearing about Roger Moore's death is another reminder that we will all walk that way.
Roger Moore was one of the friendliest people I have ever met, and for years he has always been in my heart. I feel very fortunate to have met this nice man and his great sense of humor."

Kristina Wayborn and Roger Moore in Octopussy
Carole Ashby (Octopussy and A View to a Kill): "So very sad. I will always remember Roger as a charismatic, and funny man and will always have the memories of an amazing, glamorous and exciting time. Its the end of a golden era. I was lucky to be part of it."

Safira Afzal (Octopussy): "So sorry for Roger's loss. A true gentleman and gentle soul. What a miserable day with what else has been going on in Manchester."

Tanya Roberts (A View to a Kill): "So sorry to hear about Roger passing away today. We had a lot of fun working on A View to a Kill together. He always had a joke to tell, and was a pleasure to work with. He was a terrific guy! RIP my 007"

Tanya Roberts, Roger Moore and Grace Jones at Chantilly in Paris
Grace Jones (A View to a Kill): "Roger will stay in my memory forever as a great gentleman and great father. He will be missed. And will always remain one of my best experiences in my filming career. During the shoot we were like a big family, spending all our time over a year together.
I first met him at a lunch at Pinewood Studios [in London] with his wife just before filming of the Bond film started. I was told that his wife [Luisa Mattioli] always wanted to meet the actresses that he was going to have a love scene with. Then Dolph Lundgren, my lover at the time, walked in, and Luisa said, ‘I don’t have to worry about her.’ And Roger said, ‘He is as big as Denmark.’ And we all laughed."

Swedish action hero Dolph Lundgren (invited to Roger's 80th birthday dinner in Hollywood 2007): "Roger Moore was a fabulous man. I first met him during the filming of A View to a Kill when I dated Grace Jones. Smoking a cigar during lunch at Pinewood Studios he used to look over at my table and note 'Dolph is larger than Denmark'.
I have always been an admirer of his hard work of charity, his elegant style, classical humor and positive attitude to life. He will be missed by so many."

Other members of the Bond family remembers Sir Roger Moore:

Sound editor Colin Miller : "So sad. Roger will be greatly missed. He bought great joy to many people, first as a man, and second as an actor."

Visual effects supervisor Alan Church: "Very saddened... Sir Roger was MY Bond. First seeing The Persuaders every Sunday afternoon on ITV then Bond at the cinema. My brother and two school-friends have been reminiscing of the days we went to nearly all the Odeons in London following around LALD, TMWTGG, TSWLM and my first premiere - Moonraker at the Odeon Leicester Square.
Sir Roger was my escape.. was my very reason I wanted to be part of Cubby's Bond family, and my dream came true in 1983.
And, as Lulu sang... 'Goodnight Goodnight sleep well my dear no need to fear JAMES BOND WAS HERE'. RIP xxx"

James Linton (stand-in for Sir Roger during his last three Bond films): "He will be well missed in the industry. A very caring and generous person when I worked with him, he always had time for people. With a film crew we never stopped having a good laugh as he would always tell a good joke when arriving on set."

Actor David Hedison (Live and Let Die): "Roger had this ability to lighten up any set and the actors and crews loved him. We've been friends for over 50 years now and he was still the very kind, generous man I met in 1963. Rest in Peace dear Friend."

Actor John Moreno (For Your Eyes Only): "l only knew Roger for three weeks during the filming in Cortina. It was very much a professional relationship but a true gentleman and a very generous actor to work with. No star attitude...Not at all… He made me feel we were simple fellow actors working together as equals... But between ‘takes’ we used to laugh... and how we laughed... He had a wonderful sense of humour! Amazingly he seemed to know everyone's name… the entire crew?
I fondly remember one ‘take’, which was the two of us in a two shoot… John Glen, the director, said ‘Okay, next we'll do a close-up on Roger’... And Roger turned to him and said ‘No, no, do a close up on John [meaning me] instead’ and we did. l can't think of another star that would do that, or ever think of doing it. Such a generous man who will be greatly missed."

Actor Kabir Bedi (Octopussy): "I was just 36 when I met Roger Moore on the set. He then had an Italian wife, Luisa Mattioli. I was well known in Italy as a major European star, so his wife told him how big I was. So, he knew me as a very successful actor and greeted me very warmly when we met. We had a lot of respect for each other.
He was a very reserved gentleman on one level. It took time for him to open up but he was a lovely person to be around and I admired Roger. He was a university by himself.
He brightened up the dialogue at times, he was very helpful as an actor, not like some actors who can you make you uncomfortable. He was a very warm human being, very humanitarian. I grieve for the whole family. RIP"

Kabir Bedi, Maud Adams, Cubby Broccoli, Roger Moore, Lois Maxwell and Desmond Llewelyn in India
Tennis player and actor Vijay Amritraj‏ (Octopussy): "Wonderful memories of my dear friend Roger Moore. One of the nicest people I have ever met. And it was a real honor to work with him in my debut film. Amazing class, panache, humor and stature. From The Saint to Bond to UNICEF [I was UN Messenger of Peace during his time as Goodwill Ambassador].
My deepest condolences to Deborah, Geoffrey and Christian. I will miss the wonderful and charismatic Roger. RIP"

Vijay Amritraj Roger Moore with Desmond Llewelyn in Octopussy
Actor Robert Dix (Live and Let Die): "The passing of Sir Roger came so unexpectedly it shocked the 007 World and all of us that are and always will be friends through memories and our personal friendship with Roger. The body of work he left for us as an Actor and as a humanitarian through UNICEF speaks for itself through children all over the world that benefited from Roger's love and concern. The Dix Family has prayed for the advancement and progress of his soul through all the worlds of God. He will be missed by millions."

Yaphet F. Kotto (Live and Let Die): "My head and heart was reeling from the tragic events in Manchester, England, and then I was further shocked by the passing of my friend and co-star of Live and Let Die, Sir Roger Moore. I will miss Roger for many many reasons. To me this is a great loss, may his family find peace and may God receive his soul. Good bye Roger, my prayers are with you always Buddy!"

Yaphet Kotto with Roger Moore on Live and Let Die
FSWL founder Anders Frejdh: "No words can describe how sad we are over the news of Sir Roger's passing. He was truly one of a kind. Having had the genuine pleasure of meeting him several times over the years in Canada, England & Sweden and seen what a lovely human being he was in real life it's difficult to accept he's no longer with us. So many fond memories of him as he was such a great story teller. And will never forget when I and 20 other lucky people were going to take the group photo above with him during a UNICEF Canada dinner in Quebec 2006 for which he prepared everyone by saying "Just repeat after me... witty, titty, cheeeeesse". Our heartfelt condolences to his family. And thank you, sir. For everything."

A CELEBRATION OF ROGER MOORE (JAMES BOND)

FSWL celebrates Sir Roger Moore - the popular James Bond actor and UNICEF ambassador - on his 89th birthday today. Catch up with the legend on his UK tour this fall.

With this page, FSWL would like to send our best wishes to a wonderful person and extremely generous gentleman. After meeting him several times we know he is a genuine hero for many people around the world.

"Our sincere best wishes for your birthday Sir Roger, Sweden loves you!"

About Roger Moore:
Sir Roger Moore is perhaps best know for playing James Bond and The Saint in the internationally successful film and TV shows. One of Britain's most famous actors, he was awarded the CBE by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II in 1999 and more recently recieved a knighthood in the Queen's Birthday Honours.

Roger was introduced to UNICEF in 1991 by the late Audrey Hepburn, after she asked him to take part in an event and he heard her speak so passionately about UNICEF's work. Since then, Roger has worked tirelessly on behalf of the organisation worldwide.

Roger and his Swedish wife Kristina have travelled all over the world to visit UNICEF projects and to bring the world's attention to the millions of children who need our help.

Roger Moore says:
"Once you have seen a child that is unnecessarily dying, once you've seen a child who is blind because of a lack of Vitamin A, or with arms as thick as your finger, you cannot help but be moved, and speak with the same passion that hooked me."

Help make a difference to all the world's children by purchasing Sir Roger Moore original hand signed collectibles, all profits will go to UNICEF.

In September 2008, Roger Moore came out with his autobiography, My Word Is My Bond. In April 2009 it was published in Swedish under the title, Mitt namn är Moore - Roger Moore.

Dashing, handsome and every inch the archetypal English gentleman, he was unforgettable as The Saint, as Lord Brett Sinclair in "The Persuaders" and, of course, as James Bond, making seven blockbusting films (from 1973's Live and Let Die, The Man with the Golden Gun, The Spy Who Loved Me, Moonraker (1979), For Your Eyes Only and Octopussy (1983) to 1985's A View to a Kill) as arguably the most debonair of the 007s.

SWEDISH EDITION OF LAST MAN STANDING

Last Man Standing, the third book by Sir Roger Moore in recent years (following My Word Is My Bond published in 2009 and Bond On Bond published in 2012), is published in Sweden by Bokförlaget NoNa.

In a career that spans over seven decades, Roger Moore has been at the very heart of the show business scene. Of course, he's an actor and has starred in films that have made him famous the world over; but he's also a tremendous prankster, joker and raconteur - in fact, he's well known as one of the nicest guys in the business, and someone who has always been up for some fun.

In this fabulous collection of true stories from his stellar career, Roger lifts the lid on the movie business, from Hollywood to Pinewood. It features outrageous tales from his own life and career as well as those told to him by a host of stars and filmmakers, including Tony Curtis, Sean Connery, Michael Caine, David Niven, Frank Sinatra, Gregory Peck, John Mills, Peter Sellers, Michael Winner, Cubby Broccoli and many more. Wonderfully entertaining and laugh-out-loud funny, this selection of tales from the world of the movies is vintage Moore at his very best.

13 APRIL 2011
BOND ON BOND BY ROGER MOORE ANNOUNCED

Sir Roger Moore will provide a guide to the cars, gadgets and girls of the James Bond movies to help celebrate the spy series' 50th anniversary on the big screen in 2012.

Sir Roger Moore will provide a guide to the cars, gadgets and girls of the James Bond movies to help celebrate the spy series' 50th anniversary on the big screen.

Louise Dixon, Michael O'Mara senior editorial director, bought world rights to Bond on Bond from Lesley Pollinger at Pollinger Ltd. The book will be published in September 2012, coinciding with 50 years of the Bond film franchise and the release of a new movie featuring the suave super-spy.

Michael O'Mara said: "Once you have worked with Roger you find yourself saying, like Oliver Twist: 'Moore please!'"

The book will feature Moore's thoughts on the flashy gadgets, fast cars and evil villains that made the Bond series so iconic. It will also serve as a part memoir as Moore reminisces about his own time as Bond. He replaced Sean Connery as James Bond in seven films, beginning with "Live and Let Die", released in 1973.

Dixon said: "We are truly delighted to have secured this fabulous book filled with fantastic colour photographs and memories from Sir Roger: the ultimate Bond book from the ultimate Bond himself!"

In 2008, Michael O'Mara published My Word is My Bond, Moore's autobiography. It has sold 106,219 copies in all editions, for £1,121,609.64, according to Nielsen BookScan figures.

Moore commented: "I'm greatly looking forward to delving into my memory box again and rummaging through the photo albums to admire my great physique, dashing good looks and full set of teeth."

Lesley Pollinger said: "We are all hugely looking forward to working with Sir Roger and the Michael O'Mara team once again on this ultimate Bond-on-Bond book and will share a celebratory martini at the LBF. I would also like to share Sir Roger's actual enthusiastic response on hearing that O'Mara had secured the rights - but sadly, like so much of his wit, it is unprintable!".

Many thanks to our dear friend Marie-France Vienne for the head's up on this book!

ROGER MOORE'S MY WORD IS BOND IN SWEDISH (POCKET)

Mitt namn är Moore - Roger Moore (Original title: My Word Is My Bond) written by Roger Moore is re-published in Swedish in paperback by Norstedts.

This is the frank, funny and charming autobiography of legendary James Bond star Roger Moore.

The quintessential suave hero, Roger Moore has had an extraordinary career that has spanned seven decades, from early television to the golden age of Hollywood and on to international superstardom. Packed with stories about his childhood in London and experiences during World War II, along with anecdotes about his encounters with the stars and his wonderful memories of Hollywood, "My Word is My Bond" provides a fascinating insight into the life and career of a true icon.

DECEMBER 2009
ROGER MOORE APPEARS IN COMIC BOOK

Icons of stage and screen, SIR ROGER MOORE and SIR IAN MCKELLEN have helped an artist realize his life-long dream.

BRIAN GORMAN asked the eminent thespians if they would ‘play’ characters in his debut comic book story, and they were only too happy to do so:
“I’ve loved Roger for years, first as TV’s ‘The Saint’ when I was a kid, then later as James Bond. And Sir Ian has long been an inspiration to me as we both grew up in Wigan. He is even starring in the re-make of one of my favourite TV series this year – ‘The Prisoner’ (due to be premiered on ITV in 2010). I explained the concept to them, and they gave me permission to use their likenesses”.

BORDERLINERS: Ceremony Of Innocence was written & drawn by Brian, a year ago. It’s a fast-moving 21st century espionage tale with more than a nod to TV’s ‘Spooks’ and the Jason Bourne movie franchise, not to mention the mind-bending sci-fi stories of Philip K Dick (‘Blade Runner’, ‘Total Recall’, ‘Minority Report’, etc). The grittily realistic tale finds double-crossed government agents fighting to recover their sanity, and hit back against a corrupt department of M.I.5. Gorman produced the first issue, and sent it out to industry professionals as a ‘pilot’ intended to gather comments and advice. He was overwhelmed by the response:
“I sent it to the biggest names I could think of, and people who’s own work I admired. IF I got a good response, I knew it would give me the kick I needed to plunge into an industry I’d always wanted to work in”.

DEZ SKINN, legendary Marvel UK Comics editor, second-in-command to Spider-Man creator STAN LEE, and creator of ‘Dr Who Magazine’, ‘Starburst’, and ‘House of Hammer’ read the comic. He loved it:
“..In Brian’s case, I can’t wait for his second, third, and every issue of Borderliners that follows. It delivers a totally engrossing storyline enhanced by an admirable art style. Bring it on, Brian!”.

Multi award-winning ‘Judge Dredd’, ‘Batman’, and ‘Luther Arkwright’ writer/artist BRYAN TALBOT was also impressed:
“..I’ve seen your work develop over many years, and you’ve now achieved a new level of confidence and visual flair”.

And LIAM SHARP (artist on ‘X-Men’) said:
“The effort that’s gone into this is clear on every page. It’s a joy to read something that doesn’t treat the reader like an idiot.”

MIKE COLLINS, artist on Dr Who Magazine, Spider-Man, etc., agreed:
“It has a confident feel to the structure and dialogue – a sense you know where you’re going, and I’m keen to be along for the ride. I want to know what happens next! And that’s more than I can say about most mainstream stuff these days!”

Brian has now written the first issue of a series of ‘BORDERLINERS’, and is about to embark on the artwork. His method involves taking many reference photographs, and even casting friends and actors to ‘play’ the characters. If any budding thespians/models or actors would like to see themselves alongside Sir Roger and Sir Ian, then Brian is keen to hear from you!
“Just email me at brianinchester@yahoo.co.uk, with a photo, and let’s see. I’m always keen to involve people with a genuine interest, and love for film, art, etc. Also, if anyone has a business, or location they’d like to see depicted, then drop me a line. Maybe someone would like to see Sir Roger or Sir Ian browsing in their shop?!”

Having published the pilot issue through a small independent company, Unico Comics of Newcastle, he will be aiming the new work firmly at the big boys. But what has he been doing for the past couple of decades?
“I’ve tried my hand at everything really, including several years in a Wigan greengrocers after a very silly lady at the local careers office told me ‘There are no cartoonists in Wigan, so do a ‘proper’ job”!!”

Whilst working at The Chester Gateway Theatre for 12 years, mainly in the box office, Gorman went on to write, produce and act in several of his own short, independent films featuring the likes of DESMOND LLEWELYN ( ‘Q’ in the James Bond movies) and GEORGE COSTIGAN (who played the villainous Max Capricorn in the Dr Who Xmas special ‘Voyage of The Damned’). He also played leading roles in professional corporate and educational videos, and recently acted in a music video for upcoming Manchester rock band TO CATCH A THIEF.

Whilst at The Gateway he acted alongside award-winning Hollywood star EDDIE MARSAN (recently seen co-starring with WILL SMITH in ‘Hancock’) in a professional production of ‘Taking Liberties’, and played the lead role of ‘Lucky Eric’ in ‘Bouncers’ for the highly-regarded Tip Top Productions. As a producer/director, he even had DAVID TENNANT agree to play The Doctor in his own DR WHO video before the BBC hired the actor themselves!

“THAT was bizarre!! I’d seen David in the tv series ‘Blackpool’ in 2004, and thought he’d make a great Dr Who. I wrote and asked if he’d like to play The Doctor in a short film I was about to write and direct, and he phoned me up at work and said yes!! I then met him, and he was incredibly enthusiastic. Then, of course, the BBC got him. Just think if we’d got him on film first?!!”

Brian went self-employed last year, and his work has attracted a lot of attention, including commissions for a top London TV company:
“My artwork was seen by a producer, and I was commissioned to provide several illustrations for the ITV series ‘Martina Cole’s Lady Killers’. That was amazing – seeing my artwork on television, and having it viewed by millions!”

Never one to sit around, Gorman has recently written a short horror film, and shot it in Chester (playing a major on-screen role). A small, independent affair, he nevertheless has high hopes for the intriguingly-titled ‘TRUE LOVE’:
“Everyone has dreams, but most people never even attempt to make them come true. I say TRY, TRY and TRY again. Never give up. When I’m an old man, at least I can say “I tried”.

The pilot issue of BORDERLINERS is available to order from Unico Comics.

ROGER MOORE IN STOCKHOLM

Roger Moore visits Stockholm for a Kipling and UNICEF mission

IF in Stockholm... In September 2007, Sir Roger Moore was on a special Rudyard Kipling and UNICEF mission in Stockholm. We met up with Roger and wrote this exclusive report, originally published on his official website at http://roger-moore.com.

The press conference on 21 September, to which FSWL was graciously invited by UNCEF Sweden to attend, was held at the Nobel museum located in the Old Town.

Sir Roger Moore arrived with his lovely Swedish wife, Lady Kristina by his side, dressed endearingly in a blue and yellow tie. They entered from behind a curtain on the first floor where representatives of the Swedish press had gathered half an hour before. Interest had been overwhelming according to the museum’s Head of Marketing, Anna Thompson.

Roger Moore with Kristina Tholstrup at the Nobel Museum in Stockholm
The Museum Director Svante Lindqvist welcomed everyone and gave a brief, well researched talk on Sir Roger’s career in films and his enduring commitment to the UNICEF cause. We were told that in 1983, while shooting Octopussy in India and seeing the poverty surrounding him, that Sir Roger really started thinking about what he could do himself to make a better world.

Roger Moore with Svante Lindqvist at the Nobel Museum in Stockholm
Sir Roger took to the stage and read Rudyard Kipling’s classic 1895 poem ‘If’. Roger read it with passion and belief and spoke the words from the heart.

If by Rudyard Kipling:
"If you can keep your head when all about you
Are losing theirs and blaming it on you,
If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you
But make allowance for their doubting too,
If you can wait and not be tired by waiting,
Or being lied about, don't deal in lies,
Or being hated, don't give way to hating,
And yet don't look too good, nor talk too wise:

If you can dream--and not make dreams your master,
If you can think--and not make thoughts your aim;
If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster
And treat those two impostors just the same;
If you can bear to hear the truth you've spoken
Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools,
Or watch the things you gave your life to, broken,
And stoop and build 'em up with worn-out tools:

If you can make one heap of all your winnings
And risk it all on one turn of pitch-and-toss,
And lose, and start again at your beginnings
And never breath a word about your loss;
If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew
To serve your turn long after they are gone,
And so hold on when there is nothing in you
Except the Will which says to them: "Hold on!"

If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue,
Or walk with kings--nor lose the common touch,
If neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you;
If all men count with you, but none too much,
If you can fill the unforgiving minute
With sixty seconds' worth of distance run,
Yours is the Earth and everything that's in it,
And--which is more--you'll be a Man, my son!

The audience, who had only experienced Sir Roger’s work on TV and film, were impressed by his oratory, forgetting that the man is a RADA-trained actor who began his career on the London stage.

Sir Roger charmingly opened the proceedings in our native tongue “Goddag, mina damer och herrar, jag är mycket glad över att vara här idag.” - Good afternoon, ladies and gentlemen, I am very pleased to be here today.

He explained he had chosen this poem because he learnt it himself as a child while living in the south of England where he also discovered Kipling for the first time. He also added he had taught it to his three children; Deborah, Geoffrey and Christian. In a voice that could soothe you like vanilla, Sir Roger said “I’m open for questions”!

I asked Sir Roger what his favorite place in Sweden is: “Well, it must be Karlstad as my wife is from there! Like the famous football manager Sven-Göran Eriksson”. He did point out that he also likes Stockholm and all the restaurants there although jokingly admitting they have had a bad impact on his waistline. About working with Swedish actresses, he thought they were always very professional, appearing on set exactly when they were supposed to be there. In his Bond films, he worked with Britt Ekland (Mary Goodnight in The Man with the Golden Gun (1974)), Maud Adams (Andrea Anders in The Man with the Golden Gun (1974) and Octopussy (1983) herself), Kristina Wayborn (Octopussy’s aide, Magda) and Mary Stavin (Commander Kimberley Jones who shares vodka and caviar with 007 in the pre-titles of A View to a Kill (1985)). I encouraged the ex-Bond to speculate about the chances of a future James Bond film to be filmed in Sweden: “Well, they have to be quick and film it during the Midsummer period, otherwise it will be too dark…”

Had the world become a better place during the years he had worked for UNICEF? “I wish I could say it has become better. Of course, there are schools in places there hasn’t before. And water in places where it hasn’t. But, there are still many places that haven’t and still many who need to be helped.” What was Sir Roger most proud of from all his work? Sir Roger hesitated a bit before saying it was almost impossible to answer. “I don’t know how much money has been raised in total and all sums, large as well as small, is important … It doesn’t matter if I have affected three or four people, the most important is that I manage to forward the message to someone.”

On the question of author Kipling’s antiquated imperialist undertones, Sir Roger commented “It was the way people spoke; it was the way people thought. We have come along thru two centuries, things have changed. I don't think Kipling today would have been what is considered a racist.” Reading the man’s work makes Sir Roger feel “inadequate”.

Sir Roger loves coming to Stockholm and that he loves Sweden. The first time he ever visited the country was in 1966, for the filming of two episodes for the TV series The Saint, in Sweden entitled Helgonet. Sir Roger has read Swedish author Liza Marklund. Marklund was presented by Sir Roger as a UNICEF ambassador in 2004 at the Sheraton Stockholm (Sir Roger’s residence for this particular three-day visit.)

Although he was only supposed to answer questions about Kipling, UNICEF and his visit to Sweden, Sir Roger did have fun with some of the wider questions: which film was his personal favorite? “Lawrence of Arabia…because I wasn’t in it - I suppose that’s why!” he added in typical self-deprecating style.

Finally, and returning to the Kipling theme, Sir Roger was asked which of the characters from the author’s classic, The Jungle Book, would he have liked to portray in a film. After some consideration, he revealed it would have been the chimpanzee, King Louie. “I don’t know why but I have always liked chimpanzees.” Being asked to comment on Kipling’s
Nobel Prize he said: “Something I will never get!” (In November 2006 at the British Library, Sir Roger revealed, "I have always loved Kipling mainly because I can understand him. I also admire him because of the way he turned down most of the honors offered to him - even a knighthood. I was very happy to accept mine." Coincidentally, both Kipling and Fleming have had excellent biographies written about them by English writer, Andrew Lycett.)

Roger Moore at the Nobel Museum in Stockholm
Roger Moore and Anders Frejdh at the Nobel museum in Stockholm
Sir Roger’s performance “On Kipling…” September 22nd, held on the 3rd floor at the museum in The Swedish Academy’s Grand Hall

Roger Moore on Rudyard Kipling at Nobel Museum in Stockholm
At 14:05, Sir Roger was introduced by museum director Svante Lindqvist who in his prepared speech welcomed everyone including “[Her] Royal Highness” (referring to Sir Roger’s friend Princess Lilian of Sweden who was originally due to attend but unfortunately had to cancel in the last minute). However, Countess Jill Bernadotte was present and other Swedish personalities such as actress Lena Endre with her husband, film director Richard Hobert and the Executive Director of The Nobel Foundation, Michael Sohlman.

The British knight of the realm then strode onto the stage, taking his place behind the rostrum for a precisely 90-minute talk on Rudyard Kipling. The British writer had won Nobel Prize in literature 1907 and the event celebrated that centenary. The expectant audience of around 450 people had paid 100 Swedish kronor each to attend. All sums were donated to UNICEF with extra boxes displayed around the museum for people to give more money if they wanted. As Sir Roger commented to the press the day before: “100 kronor is cheap, it should have been 14 000!”

His powerful rendition of “If” stirred the audience and the soul. The words reverberated around the venue, sage-like and resonant with a century of wisdom locked with in line. Sir Roger spoke with fire and ice and dynamite – a confident performance.

He continued his talk by talking about Kipling and his life and in-between quoting texts from Kipling’s work in the following order: “The Conundrum of the workshops”, “The Gods of the Copybook Headings”, “The Female of the Species”, “The Ladies”, “The Mary Gloster” which Sir Roger noted was a masterpiece, “Recessional”, “Danny Deever”, “Tommy”, “The Children” and finally “Epithaphs of the war”. Before reading the lines on Actors from “Epithaphs of the War” Sir Roger seemed to make a funny face…

“We counterfeited once for your disport
Men’s joy and sorrow: but our day has passed.
We pray you pardon all where we fell short
Seeing we were your servants to this last.”

Sir Roger left the rostrum after being thanked by Svante Lindqvist, went to his wife, Lady Kristina, who kissed him proudly. Sir Roger took her hand and they left the stage to a huge applause from an elated audience. Sir Roger commented afterwards that they had had a very pleasant trip to Stockholm as they also had time to see some of their friends. James Bond would return, but would Sir Roger grace Stockholm again?

Sir Roger Moore is the most popular incarnation of 007 in Sweden. He is a fine and popular actor and I was first introduced to his work via the James Bond films. However, having had the privilege of meeting Sir Roger on a number of occasions (Vue Sur 007 in Quebec in February 2006), my appreciation of the actor has matured into admiration of the man. Sir Roger has used his worldwide celebrity and fame to draw the media eye to the heartbreaking conditions of the more unfortunate children of the world. He has educated me and made my heart sing for those souls saveable yet unsaved. I urge you to donate to UNICEF now at this address www.unicef.org

Sir Roger is a great man. But I’ve a feeling, in this life, it’s an awful lot harder to be good. Sir Roger is undoubtedly both.

Special thanks to Anna Thompson (The Nobel Museum), Ingeborg Ekblom (UNICEF) and the excellent photographer Marie Regmert.

Editor's note:
If you want to read anything of Rudyard Kipling’s work look out for two of his most famous titles; The Jungle Book and The Man Who Would Be King – the film version of which, co-starring Michael Caine and directed by Casino Royale 1967’s John Huston happens to be the personal favorite of Sir Sean Connery, he revealed at the 2006 Edinburgh International Film Festival last year.

Also, look out for the superb biography on Rudyard Kipling by Andrew Lycett.

About Roger Moore:
Roger George Moore was born on October 14, 1927 in Stockwell, England, the son of a London policeman. He aspired to be an artist before catching the acting bug while working as an extra in British films. After serving in the military at the close of WWII, he came to Hollywood and made several features under contract with MGM. However, it was his TV work that catapulted him to fame in the U.S., first with Ivanhoe , then Maverick, and later as Simon Templar in The Saint ('62-'69), the role that led to Moore's casting as the new 007 in Live and Let Die (1973).

With his suave charm and boyishly handsome good looks, Sir Roger Moore embodied the ideal screen idol of the '60s and '70s. Internationally famous for his tongue-in-cheek portrayal of super-spy James Bond, Moore's most heroic role has been as himself, succeeding Audrey Hepburn as an ambassador for UNICEF (United Nations International Children's Emergency Fund), traveling across the globe to promote the needs of underprivileged children.

Sir Roger Moore went on to star in seven Bond pictures altogether, including The Man with the Golden Gun (1974), The Spy Who Loved Me (1977), Moonraker (1979), For Your Eyes Only (1981), Octopussy (1983) and A View to a Kill (1985). Moore's many other TV and film credits include: The Alaskans (1959), The Persuaders! (1971), The Cannonball Run (1981), Curse of the Pink Panther (1983), The Man Who Haunted Himself (1970), Shout at the Devil (1976), The Wild Geese (1978) and Escape to Athena (1979).

Publication for a biography about the legendary James Bond actor Roger Moore. The book is written by Gareth Owen and Oliver Bayan and published by Robert Hale Ltd, softcover version which retails for 12.99 pound.

Most famous as suave sleuth Simon Templar in the 1960s, Roger Moore hung up his halo and in 1973 stepped into the shoes of James Bond 007 for a blockbusting seven adventures - making his one of the most recognizable faces in the world.

Roger Moore has enjoyed an amazingly successful and varied career in both television series and feature films ranging from Ivanhoe, Maverick, The Saint and The Persuaders to The Man Who Haunted Himself, Gold, The Wild Geese, The Cannonball Run and Boat Trip. His wicked sense of humour and raised eyebrow has endeared him to both peers and fans alike.

Authors Gareth Owen and Oliver Bayan now offer the full story of his films and career, punctuated with memories and anecdotes from the man himself.

With over 100 photographs, many never before published, and some from Moore's own collection, Roger Moore: His Films and Career offers an insight into the world of the intensely private actor and tireless charity worker.
