M in SKYFALL (2012) and SPECTRE (2015)
I was fortunate to attend the Master Class with Ralph Fiennes, the fourth actor to play Bond’s boss - more known as M - at the 2014 Göteborg International Film Festival (GIFF).
It was very interesting to listen to the acclaimed and multi-awarded actor and even got to chat with him for a bit.
Ralph Fiennes turned out to be a very humble, almost a bit shy, and down-to-earth. Simply wonderful!
During the 60-minute talk (which I recorded for transcription later) he spoke with Jonas Holmberg (the festival's artistic director) about his acting career, the transition into directing films (for which he graciously thanked the late producer Simon Channing Williams) and in particular
The Invisible Woman which was shown at the festival.
About
Bond 24 (2015), Fiennes wasn't (for obvious reasons) allowed to say much although he said a draft of the screenplay was to be expected within a month or so, and that filming were being planned to commence in October later this year. For natural reasons, being a long-time Bond fan, Fiennes was very excited to start working on the film.
Editor's note:
"M" was first played by Bernard Lee, from Dr. No (1962) until Moonraker (1979). When Lee sadly passed shortly before filming started for For Your Eyes Only (1981) the part was withdrawn from the screenplay.
Robert Brown (1921-2003) then took over and played him in four Bond films between 1983 and 1989.
Dame Judi Dench played M in seven films from 1995 to 2012.
