The Broccoli family has long been Hollywood royalty, providing one of the rarest elements in the volatile, ever-changing world of film – a sure thing. A Bond movie will come out and people all over the globe will rush out to see it – a process so regular, one could set an Omega by it. On Wednesday, 21 September 2022, producers Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli of EON Productions received an honour reserved for true icons of the movie business – getting their signatures and handprints immortalized in concrete at Hollywood’s historic TCL Chinese Theatre.
From Sweden With Love (FSWL) was honoured to be invited to the intimate ceremony in the theatre’s courtyard emceed by FSWL reader Levi Tinker. Small world.
It was indeed a family affair with multiple members of the Broccoli and Wilson families on hand. Family friends including actress/producer Colleen Camp, screenwriter Bruce Fierstein, producer Fred Zollo and others mingled as the courtyard’s sound system played a medley of classic James Bond themes.
Actor Christoph Waltz (Blofeld in 2015's Spectre and 2021's No Time To Die) made a humorous introduction, then Michael and Barbara took the stage. Michael remarked that he and Barbara “love movies and love making movies, so being here is a great honour.” He also mentioned that he grew up just a few blocks away in Hollywood and would use his money to buy a hotdog, a chocolate bar, a soda and see a double feature. He also praised each Bond actor by name along with “the talented technicians and the global audiences without which we wouldn’t be standing here.”
And with that, the two famed producers signed a block of fresh cement and pressed their handprints down in the great tradition of Marilyn Monroe, Clint Eastwood, Roy Rogers, Sean Connery, and countless other showbiz luminaries. It was a privilege to share this well-deserved honour with them.
