Amazon MGM Studios, Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli today announced that they have formed a new joint venture to house the James Bond intellectual property rights, and those parties will remain co-owners of the franchise. Under the terms of the new venture, Amazon MGM Studios will gain creative control of the James Bond franchise following closing of the transaction.

“Since his theatrical introduction over 60 years ago, James Bond has been one of the most iconic characters in filmed entertainment,” said Mike Hopkins, Head of Prime Video and Amazon MGM Studios. “We are grateful to the late Albert R. Broccoli and Harry Saltzman for bringing James Bond to movie theatres around the world, and to Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli for their unyielding dedication and their role in continuing the legacy of the franchise that is cherished by legions of fans worldwide. We are honoured to continue this treasured heritage, and look forward to ushering in the next phase of the legendary 007 for audiences around the world.”

“With my 007 career spanning nearly sixty incredible years, I am stepping back from producing the James Bond films to focus on art and charitable projects. Therefore, Barbara and I agree, it is time for our trusted partner, Amazon MGM Studios, to lead James Bond into the future,” said Michael G. Wilson.

“My life has been dedicated to maintaining and building upon the extraordinary legacy that was handed to Michael and me by our father, producer Cubby Broccoli. I have had the honour of working closely with four of the tremendously talented actors who have played 007 and thousands of wonderful artists within the industry. With the conclusion of No Time To Die (2021) and Michael retiring from the films, I feel it is time to focus on my other projects,” commented Barbara Broccoli.

In 2022, Amazon acquired MGM, including a vast catalog with more than 4,000 films and 17,000 TV shows. Since the MGM acquisition, Amazon has held rights to distribute all of the James Bond films, and as a result of this transaction will have creative control over future productions.

From Sweden with Love founder and George Lazenby manager Anders Frejdh comment the news

“I’m relieved and happy to finally receive confirmed news on the future of James Bond films after much speculation and rumors in the media which I always take with a big pinch of salt

Personally, I must admit that my passion for Bond sunk with the shocking end of the last film so it’s very exciting to finally know that new films will soon be on their way. It was inevitable that a carefully curated film series run by a strong, creative and passionate family for over 60 years was going to change hands at some point considering the changing movie making landscape. One can argue if Amazon is the right company for it but being one of the biggest companies in the world, the writings were on the fall ever since they purchased MGM in 2022. Amazon made a big investment in buying MGM (8.5 Billion dollars) and naturally need a reasonable rate of return for their shareholders to justify that decision. Money talks.

I wish to take this opportunity to thank Barbara and Michael for their long, hard and dedicated work. A privilege to have been invited to interview both at two occasions over the years. They are extraordinary producers. It’s not an easy task to keep all parties happy when running a franchise which a lot of people around the world have an opinion about. Having witnessed Barbara thanking Michael for his companionship on the stage at Royal Albert Hall in London during the World premiere of No Time To Die, I always felt it would be a difficult challenge for her to continue without Michael in the tough film industry. Especially since the duo gave it all during the Daniel Craig era and understandably have a desire to do something else for the rest of their lives.

On behalf of all James Bond fans, here’s hoping that Amazon respect Barbara and Michael’s legacy and don’t mess the franchise up with too many spin-offs in the same way Disney have done with the Star Wars franchise. Quality before quantity always wins in the long run.” – Anders Frejdh
