A Celebration of German Actress Karin Dor (1938-2017)

FSWL joins Bond fans around the world in mourning the passing of one of “The” classic Bond Girls – Karin Dor (1938-2017), star of 1967’s James Bond film You Only Live Twice opposite Sean Connery, who died in Munich on 6th November 2017. Our thoughts now goes to Karin's family and friends.

Born in Weisbaden in 1938, Karin Dor rose to fame in a series of European movies including As Long As You Live, The Invisible Dr. Mabuse, The Treasure of The Silver Lake (with Tarzan actor Lex Barker) and 1965’s The Face of Fu Manchu co-starring future Bond star, Christopher Lee. On American TV, she appeared in episodes of It Takes A Thief, Ironside and The F.B.I..

With her beauty and skills. she drew millions into her spell. And actually the only German Bond girl to date, but now she has left the stage of life forever.

In 1966 she was cast as Helga Brandt, the “Confidential Secretary” to Teru Shimada’s Mr. Osato character in You Only Live Twice. She followed a familiar Bond femme fatal pattern: seducing 007, then trying to kill him. She suffered a memorable screen death – being devoured by arch villain Ernst Stavro Blofeld’s hungry piranha fish (memorably played by Donald Pleasence), which was a series first!

Following Bond, Brandt enjoyed a long career in German cinema and TV and was, until recently, acting on the German stage.

Karin Dor's tragic accident

In July of 2016, according to BILD, Ms. Brandt was reportedly knocked down by a baby pram, hitting her head causing severe cranial injuries. Unfortunately, her health began to waver until she could no longer complete performances despite valiantly trying to do so. Karin Dor was 79 years old and leaves behind a son from her marriage to Austrian director Harald Reinl.

FSWL and the rest of the Bond world will definitely miss the lovely and dangerous Helga Brandt.
