The James Bond Movie Encyclopedia presents This Day in James Bond Movie History - wishing a very Happy Birthday to Sean Bean, who portrayed Alec Trevelyan – an ex-Double O turned super villain in Pierce Brosnan’s 007 debut, GoldenEye (1995).
After a six year absence from the big screen, James Bond came roaring back in this action-packed entry, which brought the series back to international attention. Hopefully, after an even longer absence, 007 will come back strongly this fall with No Time To Die.
Bean’s gritty Trevelyan starts out as Bond’s friend and fellow Double O (006, to be exact), but his supposed death in an MI6 sabotage operation is exaggerated. He returns as Janus, the ruthless head of a Russian crime organization, with revenge on its mind.
Bean has always been one of my favorite actors. His Boromir in the first Lord of the Rings film is a sword-wielding killing machine, and his Ned Stark, the patriarch in Game of Thrones was one of his more sympathetic roles. More recently, I enjoyed his grit as the determined astronaut liaison administrator in The Martian.
So let’s raise a tall vodka to another Sean of Bond lore who made a strong impression on all of us. Happy Birthday, Mr. Bean.
