With public interest in Ian Fleming’s fictional master spy showing no signs of waning, an auction dedicated to James Bond and his contemporaries such as The Saint and The Man from UNCLE has been announced by Ewbank's, the South East of England’s premier antiques and fine art valuers and auctioneers. The auction is scheduled to take place on Thursday 7th February 2019.
The timing of the sale is particularly apt as it comes shortly before shooting is due to commence on the as yet untitled
BOND 25. Widely expected to be actor
Daniel Craig’s fifth and final appearance in the role of 007, his four previous films (starting with 2006’s
Casino Royale) have made over 3 Billion USD at the global box-office which has enjoyed its greatest run of success since the peak of ‘Bondmania’ in the mid 1960’s.
The continued cinematic popularity of the series is fuelled by an active fan community that now spans several generations across the world. Associated collectables such as the
Corgi Aston Martin DB5 have been popular for decades and are constantly in demand. According to
Alastair McCrea, Ewbank’s Entertainment and Memorabilia specialist, the franchise is still the main draw:
“By releasing movies every few years, it keeps the market buoyant. There is a large breadth of material available for James Bond collectors at every price point. Some collectors focus on toys, some on autographs and others on posters. It’s a franchise that has something for everyone.”
The auction contain 244 lots ranging from toys, vintage posters, promotional items and autographs, the current auction highlights include an
OMEGA Planet Ocean Quantum of Solace limited edition watch and a large collection of boxed, as new
Gilbert toy sets. In terms of the most desirable items, McCrea believes it tends to be the earlier the better:
“Anything from the 1960’s demands a strong price. A Dr. No British quad film poster in today’s auction market can command a hammer price of around £6,000-£8,000. Only a few years ago this would have been £5,000-£7,000. When the ceiling will be reached is anyone’s guess.”
The Ewbank’s
Bond and Beyond auction will take place on the 7th February, 2019 at their Surrey showrooms. The online catalogue is now available and viewings will take place the week of the auction.
