It's May 28th, the day that James Bond creator Ian Fleming was born on in 1908. We do not need to repeat the facts of his life here. They are well known and can be accessed in many places and certainly better told than what I can put down.
The world that Fleming inhabited has changed dramatically. The world that we live in has just changed in ways that we never would never have thought imaginable only six months ago.
What is important though is that we as James Bond fans all around the world have weathered this world changing Corona pandemic which now seems to be receding. It affects and has affected many people in many different ways. Some maybe forever.
The pandemic took away the highly anticipated opening of the brand-new James Bond film No Time To Die on the eve of its release to (hopefully) later this year. Some people may not want to see it in a cinema because their views of group gatherings have forever been changed by this.
What does need to be stressed this day though is that what Ian Fleming created in 1952 is a modern myth that endures during the good times and more so in the dark times.
We can celebrate Fleming’s legacy in many ways. Make yourself some scrambled eggs and bacon. Practice your Vodka Martini making if you are still in lockdown. Read the creator’s own words in one of his novels if you have never done so and have the time. Watch a Bond movie.
But remember this. James Bond will return. We see these words on the end of Bond films. That has always happened even when we thought it was lost such as the historic hiatus from 1989 to 1995.
Ian Fleming created a character as enduring as King Arthur. Like King Arthur, James Bond will return when we most need him.
Happy Birthday and thank you, Ian Fleming.
