The James Bond Movie Encyclopedia presents This Day in James Bond History - wishing a very happy birthday to character actor Christoph Waltz, who portrayed Ernst Stavro Blofeld in SPECTRE (2015), and continues that role in No Time To Die.
In what can be considered perhaps one of the most controversial script decisions of the Bond series, it is revealed in
SPECTRE that Bond (
Daniel Craig) and Blofeld, that storied villain who dates back to the early 007 adventures, with his signature white cat, are stepbrothers. Consequently, Bond’s battle against international terrorism became a personal vendetta.
In the trailers for the new film, Blofeld, like Silva (
Javier Bardem) in
Skyfall (2012) is imprisoned in London in a transparent cell. Although incarcerated, one gets the impression that he is still controlling Spectre operations.
Waltz himself has had one of the more meteoric rises in stature over the last decade – particularly thanks to director
Quentin Tarrantino’s casting him in
Inglourious Basterds (2009) och
Django Unchained (2012).
So let’s raise a glass to the man who portrays the king of all Bond villains, who always has a spectre at his shoulder.
