The James Bond Movie Encyclopedia presents This Day in James Bond Movie History - wishing a very Happy Birthday to the wicked queen of Never Say Never Again (1983) – FSWL supporter and Golden Globe nominated actress Barbara Carrera. The zesty Nicaraguan native starred as SPECTRE assassin Fatima Blush – a character from one of the early drafts for the 1965 film Thunderball.
Like Fiona Volpe (Luciana Paluzzi) in Thunderball, Fatima Blush is ordered to assassinate James Bond (Sean Connery), but consistently fails at it. However, she is one of the most flamboyant characters in the Bond villain universe, so personified by her wild enthusiasm when her boss, Maximilian Largo ( Klaus Maria Brandauer) gives her one last chance. As she’s dancing down the ballroom stairs, she literally morphs into the Wicked Queen character from Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.
She’s such a vital part of Never Say Never Again that after her demise, the film limps to its end.
So let’s raise the stiffest drink possible to one of the most memorable characters in the 007 world.
Barbara Carrera on being cast as Fatima Blush in Never Say Never Again:
Happy Birthday, Barbara. And, once again, here’s to an exciting, prosperous and very safe New Year for all of us. Cheers!
Barbara Carrera was nominated for a Globe Globe Award both for her role as Eula in the 1975 film The Master Gunfighter and for her performance as Fatima Blush in Never Say Never Again.
