Aliza Gur Vida From Russia with Love
The James Bond Movie Encyclopedia presents This Day in James Bond Movie History - wishing Israeli actress Aliza Gur a very Happy Birthday.

In my honest opinion, I believe director Terence Young’s From Russia with Love (1963) is the most atmospheric of all the Bond films. It just drips local Istanbul realism, from the airport to the trading bazaar to the underground aqueduct that takes us under the Russian consulate to the Romani camp where James Bond (Sean Connery) and Kerim Bey (Pedro Amendariz) are introduced to a blood feud between two women vying for the same man. They are portrayed by Martine Beswick and Aliza Gur.

Thanks to John Barry’s staccato score, Young’s solid direction and the spirited energy of the two actresses, the resultant fight is riveting.

Although she gives away a few inches in height to Martine’s Zora character, Aliza’s Vida holds her own – until all hell breaks loose when Krilencu’s Bulgars attack the encampment. She and Zora are later escorted to Bond’s tent where he is told to decide which woman will marry her lover. As Bond quips, “As if I didn’t have enough problems.”

By the way, Gur was Miss Israel of 1960, beating the contest stature of the film’s Daniela Bianchi, who was Miss Rome.

So let’s raise a mug of Raki, that filthy stuff, to Aliza. Happy Birthday.
