The James Bond Movie Encyclopedia presents This Day in James Bond History - celebrating 007 Villain Day and the birthdays of Austrian actress Lotte Lenya (born 18th October 1898), Scottish actor Anthony Dawson (1916), and American actor Earl Jolly Brown (1939).
In
From Russia with Love (1963),
Lotte Lenya played Rosa Klebb, a former KGB spy master who has defected to SPECTRE. Married at the time to composer
Kurt Weill, and a popular international singer herself. Lenya was not an obvious choice for Klebb, but, wearing her Soviet uniform, and using a riding crop to make a point, she made the most of the plum role.
Anthony Dawson, with his chiseled face and sinister bearing, portrayed another SPECTRE agent, working for the title character in
Dr. No (1962). He’s Professor R.J. Dent, a geology specialist whose mission is to take out James Bond (
Sean Connery) in Jamaica. Dawson returned in
From Russia with Love to plays the hidden Blofeld’s body, while
Eric Pohlmann played his voice.
Rotund
Earl Jolly Brown co-starred in
Live and Let Die (1973) as Whisper, another one of Kananga’s nefarious confederates who will do anything to stop James Bond (
Roger Moore) from taking down their drug empire.
So let’s hoist some vodka to these late performers who are forever etched in the James Bond ecosphere.
