Ernst Stavro Blofeld voted best Bond villain
Ernst Stavro Blofeld, Bond villain and film icon in 7 films; From Russia with Love, Thunderball, You Only Live Twice, On Her Majesty's Secret Service, Diamonds Are Forever, For Your Eyes Only and Never Say Never Again - has been selected as the ultimate Bond baddie by film fans.
LOVEFiLM, Europe's largest online movie rental company, asked 1,000 of its members who they think is the vilest Bond villain.
Blofeld, who is never without his white Persian cat, is the most evil man ever. In his last appearance (to date!) on the silver screen, Swedish actor Max von Sydow played the role. Blofeld shares Ian Fleming’s birthday – 28th May – and his famous mannerisms and behaviour have been much parodied - perhaps most humourously by Mike Myers' portrayal of Doctor Evil in the Austin Powers films.
24 carat villain Auric Goldfinger (Gert Fröbe) from the eponymous 1964 Bond film ended up in second place with 21 percent of the votes.
Christopher Lee's portrayal of Francisco Scaramanga in The Man with the Golden Gun (1974) proved popular with 15 percent of LOVEFiLM's members. Despite being the world's highest paid assassin, dodging Scaramanga's golden bullets was a breeze for Roger Moore, who defeated him with a single shot at the end of the film.
In fourth place, turncoat MI6 Agent "006", Alec Trevelyan, played by Sean Bean in GoldenEye (1995), was the first glimpse of emotional betrayal beneath 007’s flinty exterior.
The first Bond villain came fifth, Dr. Julius No (Joseph Wiseman), from Dr. No (1962). He succumbed to his fate in a nuclear heavy water tank aided by Sean Connery's James Bond. In next place is the mathematical genius who can weep blood - Le Chiffre (Mads Mikkelsen) in Casino Royale (2006).
Mr Big (Yaphet Kotto), the ruthless businessman who is also known as Dr. Kananga in Live and Let Die (1973), ended up on seventh place with his voodoo tricks.
French billionaire Hugo Drax, who was played by Michael Lonsdale in Moonraker (1979), came eighth on the list with his finely wrought dream to become the first Bond villain in space.
The nasty Rosa Klebb, played by Lotte Lenya in the second Bond film in the series, From Russia with Love, is the only female villain on the list, memorable for her poison spiked shoes. In this survey, she kicked herself into ninth place, closely followed by the Nazi-experiment, KGB renegade Max Zorin, played by Christopher Walken in A View to a Kill (1985).
