United Artists/MGM Marketing Executive for 10 Bond films between 1962 and 1977
I was very fortunate to meet the former marketing and distribution executive at United Artists, Fred Goldberg, in New York (November 2007) during a James Bond symposium at Hofstra University titled The World of 007.
Goldberg had not actually been announced as a guest speaker at the event but after reading an article in Newsday he contacted the university and asked if he could come as he lived nearby.
I imagine it must have been a wonderful experience for him to come and share his memories from the Bond films as he had a long and exciting career in the film business. For many years Goldberg worked closely with
Jerry Juroe at
EON Productions.
He gave an informative view on the marketing of a James Bond film, and even brought his friend and long-time collaborator
Paul Crifo with him. Together they entertained an exciting audience for 20 minutes although I think they could have gone on much longer.
Goldberg seemed very friendly and kind, it was certainly wonderful to be able to meet and chat with him. He mentioned to me that he had been involved in the promotion of the film
Persona (1966) directed by
Ingmar Bergman.
Many thanks for a wonderful and interesting speech, Fred. You gave my experience added value and made my New York stay even more memorable!
Editor's note:
United Artists is now controlled by Tom Cruise and his business partner Paula Wagner.
