Shaken Drinking with James Bond Ian Fleming review

Putting it mildly, Ian Fleming liked a drink and he gave his hero, James Bond, the same tastes. But the booze in the books went far beyond the films' vodka martinis, shaken not stirred and magnums of champagne. When it came to liquor, Ian Fleming's agent 007 drank everything: from Miller High Life and Red Stripe beer, to German vodka, Liebfraumilch, sake, whisky, bourbon, gin and all points in between to include the odd cocktail.

This handsome tome pays deference to the bar of Bond separating the drinks into various categories: Straight Up, On The Rocks, Tall, Fizzy and Exotic. Distant Fleming cousin, Edmund Weil together with the team behind Weil's Soho Bar Swift, Bobby Hilddleston and his Swedish wife, Mia Johansson, have confected a range of bespoke recipes to include an Avalanche, a Barracuda Bite, a Trueblood, Tricky Gadget, Moneypenny, a Mr Big to name but a few. You'll pore over the pages whilst you pour a drink, especially when sipping Pussy Galore.

Interspersed with the delicious full colour photography by John Carey and tasty illustrations by Sibel Ekemen are quotes from the Bond books and Fleming's journalism commenting on all the major, nutritious alcohol groups. Ian's nephew (son of his younger brother, Richard), author Fergus Fleming introduces the proceedings with a piece called "The Pleasures Of Drinking" and we're off on a fascinating and fun journey through classic cocktails and potent new potions.
