In a PM from Miss Moneypenny's desk in London, Ian Fleming Publications has presented the new British book covers of Ian Fleming's books for this year's 70th anniversary of Casino Royale, the first James Bond 007 novel written by Fleming. Classification: Gold level (For Your Eyes Only)

The message reads as follows...

“Dear Reader,

James Bond has occupied my imagination since I first saw Pierce Brosnan dive from the dam in GoldenEye. My love of writing developed with my fascination for spying. As a child, I would spy on my neighbours and turn their movements into mystery stories. (Luckily, they were very tolerant people!) Aged twelve, I bought From Russia With Love (1957) in Pan paperback because I wanted to try writing spy fiction. I fell in love with Ian Fleming’s prose – his characterisation, visual style, uncanny imagery and dialogue. Through his plots and descriptions of place, Ian Fleming opened a window to other worlds for me – the past; distant countries; espionage. All my life, I’ve told anyone who would listen: One day, I want to write James Bond. But still I felt like I was dreaming when the Fleming family asked me to expand the world of 007 in a new series.

In Double or Nothing, James Bond has vanished and a new ensemble cast of Double O agents are racing against the clock to find him and prevent a climate catastrophe. Moneypenny now leads the Double O Section. Joseph Dryden (004) served in Special Forces in Afghanistan before a bomb blast kept him from the front lines but not the fight. Johanna Harwood (003) trained as a trauma surgeon before a life-altering event brought her to Moneypenny’s attention. Sid Bashir (009) was a chess champion before his strategic skills were recruited by MI6.

Looking back on the past year or more, I feel incredibly grateful for the welcome I’ve received from the Bond community. As a lifelong fan myself, my greatest joy is getting to know other fans, sharing our passion and diverse perspectives, both online and in person. The creativity and kindness of this community is truly special. I am so excited for all the future adventures we will share.

As the first ever Bond book I bought was a paperback, it’s thrilling now to see Double or Nothing come out in this gorgeous paperback edition.
