Ian Fleming Publications, James Bond Day
In a PM from Miss Moneypenny's desk in London, Ian Fleming Publications celebrates James Bond Day with a range of literary news for James Bond fans to coincide with this year's 70th anniversary of Casino Royale, the first James Bond 007 novel written by Fleming. Classification: Gold level (For Your Eyes Only)

The message reads as follows...

“To our agents in the field,

October 5th is affectionately known as James Bond Day, marking, as it does, the date when the first 007 movie, Dr. No premiered back in 1962.

October 5th is also the birth date of the late, great John Pearson. John passed in 2021 and is much missed by his friends and family. His legacy continues and we are honoured to celebrate his work on this special day.

This year the 5th sees the publication of a number of titles, all of which any Bond fan should own, with each book offering something rather unique. Whether you need a book to fit in your go-bag, a book for your mission-crucial business class flight or even a book to stop a bullet with, we have the volume for you.

Firstly, our friends at Ian Fleming Publications are releasing brand new editions of Kingsley Amis’ Colonel Sun (1968), Raymond Benson’s Zero Minus Ten (1997) and John Pearson’s James Bond: The Authorised Biography (1973), each of which features a fresh, bold and MI6-approved cover. To celebrate these reissues, IFP sat down with Mark Pearson, the son of John Pearson and author of the new introduction included in his father’s book, to talk all things Bond. Read the interview here.

There are also a limited number of signed copies of Zero Minus Ten available to purchase here, but note that these will be dispatched to you in November. The clock is ticking.

October 5th also sees the culmination of a project that has been years in the making. The eminent biographer Nicholas Shakespeare’s Ian Fleming: The Complete Man is finally declassified and hits bookshop shelves today. With exclusive access to the Fleming archives and featuring painstaking research, Shakespeare sheds new light on the life of a legend. With arguably more detail than any previous Fleming retrospective, it is a tome that enemy agents would do almost anything to get their hands on. Stop them by buying yours today.

We’d be remiss not to mention the various tactical operations underway at present – Charlie Higson, author of the Young Bond series and more recently On His Majesty’s Secret Service (2023), will be doing a signing event at Bert’s Books in Swindon this afternoon, before heading on to Bath for a talk at Topping & Company in the evening. A few tickets are still available here if you are not in a casino, hotel bar or dinner party tonight. Additionally this Saturday will see a special Casino Royale screening event in London, with a roundtable discussion whose participants include both Higson and Double or Nothing author Kim Sherwood. Tickets are available here.

However you choose to celebrate James Bond Day, we hope you’re able to join us in raising a glass to our most famous colleague. (Message to James: please take it easy today. But back to work tomorrow. You are needed. There is still much to be done this year...)

Sincerely,

Miss Moneypenny”
