The James Bond Movie Encyclopedia presents This Day in James Bond Movie History. Today, we remember actor Reggie Carter who passed away on this day in 1995 - he played the memorable Mr. Jones, a Jamaican operative of Dr. No - and James Bond's (Sean Connery) first adversary in the Eon Productions series, Dr. No (1962), directed by Terence Young.
Arriving in the Kingston airport, Bond is greeted by Mr. Jones who is offering chauffeur services. Excusing himself, 007 makes a telephone call to Principal Secretary Pleydell-Smith and asks if a car has been sent for him. When Pleydell-Smith says No, Bond looks through the phone booth window and glares at Mr. Jones.
Director Terence Young told me in 1977 that when he shot this scene on the first day of the location shoot in Jamaica, Sean Connery's glare was the beginning of Bond.
Reggie Carter did not pursue movie acting - he was a bit of a media celebrity in Jamaica, working as a journalist and on-air announcer, while doing advertising work and occasional theater. But he secured his place in 007 lore while taking that first hard punch from James Bond.
