James Fleming, author, Bond Behind The Iron Curtain
Saddened to report that From Sweden with Love supporter James Fleming has passed away aged 80. As Ian Fleming's nephew (son of Ian's brother Richard), author of Bond Behind The Iron Curtain (among other books), and publisher of The Book Collector (which Ian founded in 1952, the same year he wrote his first James Bond 007 novel Casino Royale) - he was an important figure in the world of Bond.

I last heard from James Fleming at the beginning of September when he congratulated me on the 20th Anniversary of the From Sweden with Love website.

Born in London on 26th February 1944, the fourth in a family of nine children. He read history at Oxford and has been variously an accountant, farmer, forester and bookseller. Before Bond Behind The Iron Curtain, he wrote two historical novels published by Jonathan Cape, The Temple of Optimism published in 2000 and Thomas Gage published in 2003.

In 2006, he wrote the first of three thrillers (also published by Jonathan Cape), White Blood, featuring the Scottish/Russian character Charlie Doig. The second book in this series, Cold Blood, was published in 2009. The third and final book of the series, Rising Blood, was published in 2011.

He took on The Book Collector as proprietor in 2016 and later editor in 2018, returning the publication to the Fleming fold. He loved his work and the journal with a passion and felt very much at home in the world of book collecting, making many friends around the world.

James Fleming passed away on 22 November 2024 following a sudden illness. He is survived by his wife Kate and two sons, Christian and Tom.

Rest in peace, my friend. I will always cherish the memories and will never forget your support of my work. Sincere condolences to the Fleming family.
