The Thursday Murder Club (2025) starring Pierce Brosnan is a new film directed by Chris Columbus with whom Brosnan previously worked with on Mrs. Doubtfire (1993) and Percy Jackson & The Lightning Thief (2010). The Thursday Murder Club premieres on Netflix on 28th August 2025.
Based on Richard Osman’s international bestselling novel of the same name, The Thursday Murder Club follows four irrepressible retirees - Elizabeth (Helen Mirren), Ron (Pierce Brosnan), Ibrahim (Ben Kingsley) and Joyce (Celia Imrie) - who spend their time solving cold case murders for fun. When an unexplained death occurs on their own doorstep, their casual sleuthing takes a thrilling turn as they find themselves with a real whodunit on their hands. Directed by Chris Columbus, the film is the latest to be produced through the Netflix and Amblin Entertainment partnership.
Pierce Brosnan portrays Ron Ritchie in The Thursday Murder Club
Ron is the real comedian of the gang. He’s into sport and supports West Ham football club. Once a militant and high-profile trade union activist, dubbed ‘Red Ron’ by the press, even in retirement he still can’t resist a fight for what he feels is right. He’s been married several times, though he’s now a widower. His real pride and joy is his son, Jason, an ex-champion boxer turned TV celebrity, who’s a regular visitor to Coopers Chase. And Ron is also good friends with Ibrahim, whom he fondly calls ‘Ibsy.’
Pierce Brosnan said on his first contact with the project, “Chris Columbus, is an old pal. We’d made Mrs. Doubtfire and Percy Jackson together and he seems to come around every ten years or so with wonderful jobs for me. So, he sent me the script and I loved it, and then I read the book. Katy Brand did a magnificent adaptation of the book - filleting it and creating the essence of characters and storyline”.
On playing Ron, Pierce Brosnan said, “Ron is a stout fellow of good character. He doesn’t particularly want to be at Coopers Chase, but there’s a time in life when you just have to hang up your spurs. He’s very humorous and there's a certain theatricality to him, there are wonderful set pieces. It’s an interesting screenplay because each scene is a standalone scene in some regards, but you have a through line of character, emotion and connection within these people’s lives.”
Brosnan on what he thinks will resonate with audiences, “The humanity of age, the humanity of these characters, the joy of them. I think everyone can identify on some level. It’s about joy, It’s about the sorrow of life, the grief of life, the dreams and expectations that we have. The unexpected relationships that we make in life. And how we move on”.
The Thursday Murder Club is available on Netflix from 28th August 2025.
