The James Bond Movie Encyclopedia presents This Day in James Bond Movie History - wishing a very Happy Birthday to Maud Adams, the only actress to ever play two leading ladies in the 007 series.
The charismatic Swede played Scaramanga’s (
Christopher Lee) girlfriend, Andrea Anders, in
The Man with the Golden Gun (1974), then returned as the smuggling title character in
Octopussy (1983).
Maud and Roger Moore definitely made a good team in the latter film, which is my favorite of the Moore dynasty.
Long and leggy,
Maud Adams is another virtually unknown international actress who came to life in the 007 world, bringing a certain mystery and smoldering sexuality to her characters. Sometimes she doesn’t have to say a word, particularly in the circus arena in
Octopussy, when Bond is trying to convince her that she’s been double-crossed by Kamal Khan (
Louis Jourdan) and General Orlov (
Steven Berkoff). Dismissing Magda’s (
Kristina Wayborn) warning that he’ll destroy the operation, she grabs a security officer’s pistol and blows the lock off the box containing the A-bomb – giving 007 the chance to disarm it. For my money, a cool scene.
It was also fun to see her as Christopher Lee’s girlfriend in the earlier film – just the fact that Lee had a girlfriend was revolutionary for his screen persona.

So let’s raise a goblet of Aquavit to a great Swedish export. Happy Birthday, Maud.
