The James Bond Movie Encyclopedia presents This Day in James Bond Movie History - wishing Italian actress Luciana Paluzzi a very Happy Birthday.
Luciana Paluzzi made an indelible impression as voluptuous, red-headed, SPECTRE executioner Fiona Volpe in the fourth James Bond movie, 1965's
Thunderball directed by
Terence Young.
We first meet her at Shrublands, a British health clinic where plans are afoot to substitute a plastic surgery-enhanced enemy agent for NATO observer Francois Derval (
Paul Stassino) who is about to board a training mission on an atomic bomb-equipped Vulcan bomber. Her appearance in a skimpy negligee in the arms of the doomed Derval was quite memorable.
Her job through most of this spectacular James Bond movie is to knock off 007 (Sean Connery), and she’s wildly unsuccessful.
However, with her arrogant demeanor, blood lust and devotion to all-things SPECTRE, she makes the most of every scene she’s in. My favorite is when Bond arrives back at his Nassau hotel suite and finds Fiona in his bathtub. When she asks for something to put on, Bond hands her a pair of shoes...
So let’s raise a tall one to one of the best of Bond adversaries who only rests when she’s just dead. Happy Birthday, Luciana.
