The James Bond Movie Encyclopedia presents This Day in James Bond Movie History - remembering the late Jack Lord (1920–1998) on the anniversary of his birth in 1920. Lord was the first Felix Leiter of the CIA, debuting in the first James Bond movie, Dr. No (1962).
A man’s man who would go on to portray Detective Steve McGarrett in multiple seasons of his signature television show
Hawaii 5-0,
Jack Lord gave us a no-nonsense Leiter who gets a dramatic introduction in the film. Lured into the storeroom of Puss Feller’s Kingston beachside bar, James Bond (
Sean Connery) gets into an initial tussle with Puss Feller (
Lester Pendergast) and Quarrel (
John Kitzmiller) until a voice tells Bond to put his hands up – it’s Leiter in dark glasses, who then introduces himself as a compatriot, not an enemy.
The first James Bond film is loaded with terrific characters that add a sense of realism to the story that has become a hallmark of the Daniel Çraig era – Lord was definitely one of them.
So let’s raise a Jamaican rum punch to a fine actor who loved to wear straw hats and was finally identified properly in an iconic still by yours truly after a ton of people felt I needed an eye check.
