Goldfinger (1964) at Film4 Summer Screen at Somerset House!
The 007 series at its sensational best, as Sean Connery's James Bond mixes it up with memorable characters such as Oddjob and Pussy Galore. Incredible sets, a belting theme song and plenty of swinging ‘60s style.
About the film:
Stars: Sean Connery, Gert Fröbe, Honor Blackman
Director: Guy Hamilton
The Bond franchise really started to take off with this third, and best, instalment. Sean Connery's Bond is sent to investigate Auric Goldfinger (Gert Frobe), who is stockpiling gold bullion, intending to nuke Fort Knox, and hence increase the value of his gold. There are some outstanding moments in this film: Bond gets a nasty laser beam trained on his trouser area, one of his girls is suffocated by being painted all over in gold paint and the script boasts some truly memorable dialogue: "Do you expect me to talk?" "No, Mr Bond, I expect you to die!"
Refreshingly adult and deliciously violent compared to the comic book style of most of its successors, Goldfinger is a thrill-a-minute, and stuffed with wit. German veteran actor Frobe, as Goldfinger, makes one of the all-time great Bond villains - and Shirley Bassey's classic title track is the business. A fantastically entertaining 007 adventure.
About the screening:
Goldfinger screens on Monday 2 August at Somerset House, the UK's largest outdoor cinema. Somerset House is a spectacular neo-classical building in the heart of London, sitting between the Strand and the River Thames. Doors open 18.30, DJs from 19.30 and films start at 21.15. You are welcome to bring your own rugs, blankets and cushions to sit on (sorry no chairs, or portable furniture - inflatable or otherwise). Rugs will also be available to buy.
