The James Bond Movie Encyclopedia presents This Day in James Bond Movie History - wishing actress Maryam d’Abo a safe and happy 60th birthday. The London native played Kara Milovy, a willowy, Czechoslovakian cellist who gets caught in a huge web of international intrigue in Timothy Dalton’s 007 debut, The Living Daylights (1987).
It seems that Kara has fallen under the spell of renegade Soviet general Georgi Koskov (
Jeroen Krabbe) whom Kara believes seriously wants to defect. In reality, Koskov is in cahoots with Brad Whitaker (
Joe Don Baker), a nefarious arms trader, with whom he’s negotiating a huge drug deal with Afghanistani rebels.
Maryam d’Abo is perfectly cast as the innocent dupe – and her chemistry with the new James Bond – Timothy Dalton - is palpable.

She’s another fine discovery for the Bond series – part of a long line of amazing international actresses who received their first exposure under the 007 flag.
So let’s raise a martini, shaken not stirred of course, to Maryam, and let us also toast each other as we celebrate the upcoming New Year.
