The James Bond Movie Encyclopedia presents This Day in James Bond Movie History - wishing a very Happy 50th Birthday to The World Is Not Enough (1999) actress Denise Richards. Ms. Richards portrayed Dr. Christmas Jones, a nuclear scientist tasked with supervising the decommissioning of A-bombs.
Perhaps no other actress in the Bond series has received such a mixture of pure delight and fierce criticism for a role. It seems the most vicious critics felt she was totally miscast as a nuclear scientist. Come on! Personally, I thought she was a lot of fun and she had great chemistry with Pierce Brosnan. And, if it isn’t too sexist to say, she looks terrific in shorts.
Fact file on Dr. Christmas Jones, the gifted and confident scientist in TWINE:
Like most of us, I had discovered her in director Paul Verhoeven’s science fiction film from 1997, Starship Troopers, in which she played a capable space pilot name Ibanez. She was a striking presence in that film, a terrific female lead, and I understand why she came to the attention of the Bond producers.
She plays sarcastic quite well – and that’s how she’s introduced to Bond.
So let’s give the lady a deserved break and raise a tall glass of vodka to Christmas Jones. Happy Birthday, Denise.
Denise Richards shares birthday with Moonraker girl Anne Lonnberg and British actor Rory Kinnear (Tanner in Quantum of Solace, Skyfall, SPECTRE and No Time To Die).
