The James Bond Movie Encyclopedia presents This Day in James Bond History - wishing a very happy birthday to Italian actress Caterina Murino, born on this day in 1977. She portrayed the captivating Solange in 2006's Casino Royale directed by Martin Campbell.
Dating back to Ursula Andress coming out of the water in Dr. No (1962), part of the joy of watching a James Bond film was discovering the actresses who were virtually unknown to U.S. audiences.
The producers have always kept their eye out for women who fill the screen with their unabashed sexuality and stunning beauty – Caterina was no exception.
Speaking of Ursula Andress’s debut, it is Caterina Murino’s Solange, while riding a horse on the beach, who spies James Bond (Daniel Craig) emerging from the surf off Nassau. When 007 wins her husband’s Aston Martin in a card game, she soon discovers that it’s Bond driving, not her hubby – the terrorist. Another gorgeous woman ignored by her spouse, she soon ends in a romantic tryst with James Bond – probably not the right move for a woman who is being watched by the enemy.
For my money, “Casino Royale” is the best Bond movie since the early Connery days – part of the reason was the casting – and Caterina was part of that "A" team of marvelous actors.
Let’s hoist a Mai Tai to her Solange on this day of her birth.
