The James Bond Movie Encyclopedia presents This Day in James Bond Movie History - salutes actress Barbara Bach on her birthday today. She gave an unforgettable performance as KGB Major Anya Amasova in the best of all the Roger Moore Bonds, The Spy Who Loved Me, directed by Lewis Gilbert.
The Bond films cast mostly unknown international actresses, gave them a huge platform, and turned them into instant celebrities. Of course, Ms. Bach was not as international as she appeared - she was a homegrown girl from New York City who happened to start her career working in Europe.
Barbara's character Anya was the first of a new era of Bond girls who were capable, fiercely independent and deadly in their own right. One of her best scenes takes place in a Sardinian hotel suite when she discovers that Bond has been in Berngarten, Austria (the place where her lover was killed). When Bond confesses that he probably killed him (in one of Roger Moore's best scenes, too), Anya looks him straight in the eye and warns that after the mission, she will take him out. Pretty chilling.
