Alicia Keys, who sang the theme song (Another Way To Die) to Quantum of Solace with Jack White in 2008, performs at Way Out West in Gothenburg on August 10, 2013.

Not that it is insignificant, but 11 Grammy Awards, arena tours, 35 million albums sold and more hits than you have bad habits is not what impresses with Alicia Keys. The temptation is the same as it was when her debut Songs in A Minor tumbled down out of nowhere in 2001: the ability to balance opposites and bridge contrasts.

Alicia Keys is something as unusual as both critics' favourite and pop phenomenon. For most, musical brilliance and creative integrity rarely go together with the luminous features which stars are born with, but here are both glitter and substance. She is Alicia Keys, and she's everything you could ever hope for in a poignant artistry. Liberation, protest and love. Bombastic heartthrob and minimalist popgryn. Way Out West is visited by a genuine and modern icon in August 2013.
