To promote its upcoming action/adventure film Rampage: Big Meets Bigger starring Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson (his grandfather fought Sean Connery in the 1967 James Bond film You Only Live Twice), Warner Bros staged a lavish Hollywood “press junket” where the cast and director came together for a small group of journalists to answer questions and talk about the film.
Johnson, arguably one of the world’s biggest movie stars (in physical size AND popularity) shared the stage and the movie with lovely
Naomie Harris, who FSWL fans know from her portrayal of beloved Bond secretary “Moneypenny” in
Skyfall and
Spectre.
Although the Q&A time was limited, FSWL did manage to ask Ms. Harris to contrast making a Bond film with shooting a big-budget Hollywood action movie. Her answer provided a peek behind the 007 filmmaking curtain:
“I actually went into it (RAMPAGE) thinking it would be the same as Bond, but it was completely different because Bond doesn’t really have green screens – we’re out in the real world doing those stunts and we’re doing them for real... and this was reacting to tennis balls!“
Ms. Harris was referring to the filmmaking technique of positioning an object (like a tennis ball!) for an actor to react to in a green screen environment. The creature or character would be added later through the magic of CGI (Computer Generated Imagery).
“They’d have tennis balls 1-7…” Harris continued, “and they’d say ‘Look at three, the building has collapsed! Look at 5, the (giant) wolf is leaping at you,’ and I was completely out of my mind because this is totally new to me so I had to really lean on Dwayne because he’s the master of it.” Johnson, veteran of big budget special effects films like
Jumanji and
San Andreas IS the Master of Movie Disaster!
“This is his world, “ Harris said, sitting next to the affable, but hulking Johnson, who laughed good naturedly. “The only way to get through it is to pretend you’re a kid again and just play and have fun – so that’s what I did.” Having seen the film, this writer can definitively say, Naomi Harris
expertly channeled her inner kid!
