The James Bond Movie Encyclopedia presents This Day in James Bond History - honoring the memory of Herve Villechaize, who passed away on this day in 1993 at age 50. Herve portrayed Nick Nack, the diminutive servant/assistant to Christopher Lee's Scaramanga in the second Roger Moore 007 adventure, The Man with the Golden Gun (1974), directed by Guy Hamilton.
Well-known to television audiences from Fantasy Island ("Da plane, da plane."), Villechaize brought Nick Nack to life and added an exotic color to a Bond film, which played to Roger's light comedy strengths.
For my money, Nick Nack is actually much more sinister than Scaramanga himself. Whether he's delivering tabasco sauce to a sunbathing Scaramanga, chewing on peanuts behind Bond at the fights, or working the controls at the fun house, Herve is just a lot of fun.
When we held the James Bond Weekend at the Playboy Club in Los Angeles in 1981, he was a featured guest - and everyone loved having him there.
