The James Bond Movie Encyclopedia presents This Day in James Bond History, celebrating the birthday of George Lazenby, born on this day in 1939.Of all the gentlemen who followed Sean Connery as Ian Fleming's James Bond, George Lazenby was the most striking.
Quick on his feet, good with his fists, handsome, sexy, quick with a quip, he had all the qualifications and then some. Surprisingly, he had virtually no acting experience, which is startling, because he seemed so comfortable on camera in his only 007 role in On Her Majesty's Secret Service (1969), arguably one of the best Bond films ever. Credit George's natural abilities, director Peter Hunt, a wonderful screenplay from Bond veteran Richard Maibaum, and his talented co-star, the equally striking Diana Rigg.
Had George stuck with the role - he was given horrible advice that the world of Bond was ending - he undoubtedly could have played Bond for another twenty years. Our loss.
