With this page, we would like to celebrate Peter Lamont on his 90th birthday and remind everyone about his biography The Man with the Golden Eye, co-written with Marcus Hearn, which was published by Signum Books in November 2016.

"Dear Peter, happy birthday and warmest regards from Sweden with love. Your contribution to the James Bond phenomenon is clearly evident on the big screen."

About Art Director and Production Designer Peter Lamont

Peter Lamont was born on November 12, 1929 in England and is a noted set decorator, script editor, art director and production designer.

Forever associated with the James Bond films, Peter Lamont began as a draughtsman on films such as The Importance of Being Earnest (1952), then as set decorator on This Sporting Life (1963) and Thunderball (1965), then as art director for the first time on Sleuth (1972). In this capacity he worked on several more Bond films before getting his first Production Designer credit on For Your Eyes Only (1981). Since then, he has been a regular Bond collaborator, as the films' design has grown ever more extravagantly eye-catching.

Peter once had a phone call about the mini breathing-equipment James Bond used in Thunderball, a question about how long the air lasted. Lamont replied: "As long you can hold your breath". The person on the phone said he saw Bond use it for minutes. Lamont answered: "It is the skill of the editor", and the phone went dead.

Throughout his near 60-year career in the film industry, Lamont has been nominated for three Academy Awards for his work on Fiddler on the Roof (1971), The Spy Who Loved Me (1977), and Aliens (1986). He was nominated a fourth time and won for Titanic (1997).

The only Bond films that Peter hasn't work on are Dr. No (1962), From Russia with Love (1963), Tomorrow Never Dies (1997), Quantum of Solace (2008), Skyfall (2012) (2012) and SPECTRE (2015).

On August 22, 1982, Lamont was a passenger on a Indian Airlines flight from Mumbai to New Delhi (for the location filming of Octopussy), which was hijacked by a lone Sikh militant, armed with a pistol and a hand grenade. Indian security forces killed the hijacker and rescued all passengers, including Lamont.

Since many years, Peter Lamont is a committee member of The British Film Designers Guild.

Peter has now retired from the film industry but his son, Neil Lamont, continues his legacy working as an art director.
