Jill starred as the irreverent and sarcastic diamond smuggler Tiffany Case in Diamonds Are Forever (1971), which celebrates its 50th Anniversary this year. She was also the first American to play a lead Bond girl in the series.
Introduced in her Amsterdam apartment, wearing the barest of essentials, she greets James Bond (Sean Connery) posing as fellow diamond smuggler Peter Franks. Working from a script by Richard Maibaum and Tom Mankiewciz, their repartee is clever and fun from the beginning. When Tiffany walks in as a redhead, after appearing at first as a blonde, Bond notices and she asks him which he prefers, to which 007 responds, “As long as the collar and cuffs match.”
Jill is particularly fun in Las Vegas, where she’s either terrified of Bond’s driving, sarcastic to filling station attendants (“You had your chance, Curley and you blew it”) or sexy as all get out, entertaining Bond from a round waterbed/aquarium (when Bond disrobes, she says, “Peter, I’m very impressed, there’s so much more of you than I expected.”)
So let’s raise one to Ms. St. John, a true joy in a really fun 007 adventure.
