FSWL-läsaren Matt Sherman om arbetet med The Many Facets of Diamonds Are Forever
I began work on what is now
The Many Facets of Diamonds Are Forever book three years ago, when my good friend and fellow Bond collector,
Carlos Perez, suggested we apply to present on
Diamonds Are Forever at
SAMLA, an annual academic conference in the Southeast US dedicated to the “advancement of literary and linguistic scholarship and teaching in the modern languages.” Carlos and I were delighted to be accepted as conference speakers, as only a half-dozen of 35 candidates were able to present.
Ian Fleming loved visiting Las Vegas and other DAF locations, but parodied them in his novel, so I spoke on that subtext, and Carlos presented his exciting work, “Ian Fleming and the Fairer Sex,” focused on Tiffany Case as one of the strongest characters in Fleming. The two of us also teamed to present
Diamonds props, books, videos and more alongside the gorgeous hand-painted Bond artwork of
Gerry Wadsworth (
www.jamesbondart.com), and we and Gerry met with the academicians and SAMLA’s President to tour them through Bond’s world in person.
The conference, our displays and Gerry's art were well received. Publisher Lexington Books saw a great opportunity in titles focusing on a single Bond book and film. The forthcoming book, due in March, was edited by conference chair
Dr. Oliver Buckton, a top expert on Fleming and British espionage in fiction, and features wonderful contributions from
Tom Cull of
Artistic Licence Renewed,
Jennifer Martinsen,
Dr. James Chapman (author of
Licence to Thrill: A Cultural History of the James Bond Films) and more. We appreciate book patrons, as more titles on more Bonds will see print if
The Many Facets of Diamonds is successful.
