Lanseringen av Bond, the Beatles and My Year with Marilyn: 50 Years as a Movie Marketing Man

From Sweden With Love has been following the progress of Bond, The Beatles and my Year With Marilyn – 50 Years As A Movie Marketing Man by Charles ‘Jerry’ Juroe and so was proud to help organise and attend the launch of the book in London on 11th October 2018 with a historic gathering of people from a cross section of Mr Juroe’s wonderful movie life.

Charles ‘Jerry’ Juroe, whose association with Bond began with Dr. No (1962), first was a guest at a private lunch at Balthazar Restaurant, in London’s Covent Garden hosted by Cubby’s heirs Barbara Broccoli, Michael & Jane Wilson, Tina Broccoli’s daughter Heather Callow, and Gregg Wilson (son of Michael). They dined together with Jerry’s assistants, Doug Redenius and Mark Cerulli with Bond actress Carole Ashby, five-time 007 director John Glen and his wife Janine, Jerry’s successor, Anne Bennett and her successor, current Eon head of marketing and publicity, Stephanie Wenborn. Then Jerry attended the book launch in London Film Museum’s successful Bond In Motion exhibit around the corner.

Jerry was assisted in the preparation of his book by long term friend, Doug Redenius, one of the co-founders of the US-based charity, The Ian Fleming Foundation, who planned the event from the other side of the Atlantic with skill. Doug introduced the event and revealed that American Bond novelist Raymond Benson had also helped with the text. He also read messages a number of people who could not attend: Pierce Brosnan (who had dealt with Jerry when the actor was due to be Bond in 1986), Diane Kiel, the wife of the late Jaws’ actor Richard, Fiona Fullerton, Sir Roger Moore’s old PA, Doris Spriggs and ex-Eon staffer now turned producer, Sara Romily.

The book’s co-editor is FSWL contributor Mark Cerulli, a screenwriter based in Hollywood and a noted 007 historian having participated in the the making of features on the Bond DVDs. Cerulli thanked the support of Eon Productions for their last minute help with the event and his quip, “It really was James Bond to the rescue – and we could use him in Washington!”, induced ripples of laughter. Cerulli then quoted LA’s top publicist Dick Gutman from his book Starflacker: Inside the Golden Age of Hollywood, citing an anecdote involving Jerry in a classic Hollywood moment.

Lastly, Jerry took to the floor, and was moved by everyone’s attendance and by some who could not attend as he wrote to one, “I’m sorry you were not alive to be in the index.” The 95 year old, D-Day veteran, American ex-pat, now a resident of Spain, ended poignantly, “I came up with the saying back when I was young at the age of 90...’I wish you my longevity.’”

Amongst those so blessed were a number of Bond actors and actresses including Margaret Nolan, Caron Gardner, Jenny Hanley, Sylvana Henriques, Valerie Leon, Carole Ashby, Terence Mountain and John Moreno. Also on hand were a number of Bond crew members including Alan Tompkins, Peter Lamont, John Richardson, Terry Madden, Anthony Waye (with wife, Patricia), Peter Davies, Alan Church and director John Glen.

There were also on hand a sprinkling of Eon staff members past and present including John Parkinson (with wife, Dot), Janine Glen, Rosie Moutrie, Jennie McMurrie and Jerry’s successor as Eon’s Director of Marketing, Anne Bennett (with daughter, Sam). Juroe had been close to both Cubby and Harry Saltzman so it was with great warmth he greeted Saltzman’s son, Steven and Harry’s assistant, Sue St John. Adding another multi-generational touch was Deborah Moore, daughter of the late Sir Roger. Lady Birgit ‘Gitte’ Krøncke Lee, Sir Christopher Lee’s widow, graced the room with old style chic. Sally Hibbin, author of the first official James Bond film books for the 25th anniversary of the franchise in 1987 was pleased to be reunited with her colleague, Jerry. Taking a rest from snapping was Bond unit photographer, Keith Hamshere, whose memorable Timothy Dalton Dangerous Bond picture was evoked by his book cover photograph of a casual Jerry brandishing a Walther PPK, A poster-size blow up of the cover was signed by attendees. Amidst all this living history, was Eon’s chief archivist behind Bond in Motion, Meg Simmonds.

Jerry had dealings with the Fleming estate and representing the literary era was Ms Lili Sterne-Pohlmann, partner of the late Peter Janson-Smith, Fleming's agent. Their combined Bond memories went back a long way. Current managing director of Ian Fleming Publications Limited, Corinne Turner popped by as did Fleming’s most influential biographer, Andrew Lycett whose 1995 book still sets the standard. Jon Gilbert, author of Ian Fleming: The Bibliography also facilitated sales of Jerry’s book, signed copies of which are exclusively available from Harrington Books.

The event was fuelled by Belvedere Martinis and Bollinger champagne and many other alumni from the entertainment industry were present including Chicagoan actor, Billy “Titanic” Zane, David Ball, a producer of TV's The New Avengers and The Professionals, and his son Fraser and film-maker Simon Giles. From Sweden With Love, who in addition to organising the attendance of most of the guests, also provided pictures for the book. The Bond community was represented by Dave Worrall (co-editor of Cinema Retro and author of The Most Famous Car In The World), French Bond historian and expert Laurent Perriot, Mark O’Connell (author of Catching Bullets: Memoirs of a Bond Fan) and Matthew Field & Ajay Chowdhury (co-authors of Some Kind Of Hero: The Remarkable Story of the James Bond Films) together with their cover designer, Mark Witherspoon who photographed the event.
