Gloria by Gloria Hendry
Utgivning av Gloria Hendrys självbiografi. Gloria spelade "Rosie Carver" i Live and Let Die (1973) regisserad av Guy Hamilton.

"I cannot believe that over thirty four years have passed since working on Live and Let Die with Gloria and I certainly can’t when I look at pictures of her today. I well remember our first meeting in New Orleans; she was very bright and bubbly and obviously would be a great asset to our production despite the question of James Bond being romantically linked with, as it was called in those days, a lady of colour.

Today, thank the Lord, we have moved on and that is one of the reasons I am sure that the readers of her autobiography will be intrigued and puzzled by the attitudes of 1973’s bigotry." - Sir Roger Moore KBE

Förord av Elaine Horn-Tyler:
"I believe in my soul that “friends”, true girl friends, are either meant to be forever…or not at all.

Gloria is my “true friend”…and I say that because we were “unlikely friends” in the manner in which our friendship took root, blossomed and endured over 40 years.

My mother, Pauline Horn, was the owner of a modeling school and agency in Detroit, Michigan. She was the head of “Creative Artist Development” for Holland, Dozier & Holland. It was her job to groom, polish and be the “glorified”(sorry for the pun) “den mother” for the new recording artists being signed by H-D-H…and to deal with any personal issues that may interfere with their job. Our business, Pauline Horn Enterprises & Elaine’s School of Dance had featured models and dancers for many record events that Berry Gordy gave during the “early days” of Motown, ie Hitsville USA like the “Motown Fox Theatre Revue”. When Brian, Edward, Lamont and my brother, Lawrence, decided to leave Motown and form their own recording company, I was asked to be an assistant choreographer with with the legendary choreographer, Cholly Atkins, who gave the “Temptations” that signature “Temptation step” they were so recognized for around the world.

I first met Gloria at the HDH sound studios and immediately thought she had the greatest “cheek bones” I’ve ever seen…even own my mother’s! She had come for rehearsals with the new vocal group, The Glass House, that my mother was grooming for their new record release. Gloria and I started hanging out together in New York when I was there doing some promotional work with HDH. She invited me to the Playboy Club to see her show and we spent time shopping, going to clubs and just having a good old “New York” time!

Gloria, had become romantically involved with my brother, Lawrence Horn. But soon after matters worsened between my brother and Gloria when she became determined to get out of her record contract with HDH. She was angry and hurt to realize that Lawrence had ulterior motives when he was originally “sent” to New York to persuade her to sign a recording contract that she had some strong reservations about.

With a wounded heart and needing some emotional shelter in the midst of these powerful men trying to control her future, I think Gloria needed a shoulder to lean on…that shoulder was my mother.

When my mother and my family relocated to California in 1972 we completely lost touch with Gloria. She had quickly returned to New York when her contract dissolved. I knew it was a very arbitrary and sad situation for her, both legally and personally…and that part of her unhappiness was the pain my brother had caused.

The years passed. I heard nothing about Gloria or what she had happened to her.

Somehow my mother and I found out she was living in California.. I honestly don’t recall how we reconnected, but Gloria and I both loved to dance, so we started going out salsa dancing. She’d call me to go with her to “swanky” events and we did some nice things for each other over the years, but we never ran in the same social circles. As fate would have it, when our family moved to Northridge in 1979 I discovered that Gloria later had married, Phil Wright, a musician and lived only two miles away from us in Granada Hills!

Even though the person that had broken her heart was a son and brother back in those youthful days, the abiding respect and admiration between Gloria, my mother and I was always there. Then in June, of 1998 my mother( my best friend) passed away from a brain tumor..

Gloria and I have since drawn closer. It’s as though we heard my mother urging us to renew and nourish all the “history” we had together. Because Gloria and I have lived and lost so much we cherished throughout the years, we have come to understand the value of our “sisterhood” and how friends help each other to survive the “dirt and grit” of this journey. We have learned to embrace each other’s strengths, weaknesses, differences and pain. There is still so much about each other we may yet ever know, but I am so very proud of this talented and beautiful woman, this actress/singer/dancer I know as my friend …with a body that still says “look at me”, a spirit that says..”I’m still here, Goddamit…and a passion for life.. that pulls me to want to be better! You go,“Glo”!"
