5 SEPTEMBER 2011
THE BLACK STILETTO BY RAYMOND BENSON

The US hardcover edition of Raymond Benson's (The 3rd James Bond continuation novelist after Ian Fleming) The Black Stiletto published by Oceanview Publishing.

The Black Stiletto was a legend in her own time, an underground heroine who made a name for herself during the late Eisenhower years and early Kennedy years as a New York City vigilante.

Although she was wanted by the law and would have been arrested had she been caught or had her secret identity been revealed, the Black Stiletto was a competent and successful crime-fighter. A feminist before the term was in everyday vernacular, she battled common crooks, Communist spies, the mafia, and worse — and was responsible for their capture and, in some cases, their deaths. But the Stiletto disappeared midway through the sixties and was never heard from again. Most people thought she had died, and no one ever knew her identity.

Like pinup queen Bettie Page, her mythical image resurfaced in comics and other media during the 1980s and 90s. Millions of dollars were made by others exploiting her likeness and persona.

Today, the questions remain. Who was she? Is she still alive? If so, where is she now?

The answers can be found in The Black Stiletto, by internationally-known New York Times best-selling author Raymond Benson.

Official synopsis::
Could Martin Talbot's elderly, Alzheimer-stricken mother, Judy, really have been the Black Stiletto? When Martin discovers several volumes of her diaries hidden by his mother, he is stunned beyond all imagination. His mother, the underground heroine of yesteryear? The famed ,still unidentified woman who battled Communist spies, took on the Mafia, and preyed on common crooks? The woman who exacted punishment on evildoers without mercy?

But it is all described, in great detail, in the diaries. What caused her to begin her quest for justice. Her decision to act outside the law. Her feats as the famed and feared vigilante. How her reputation exploded. In short, how it all played out.

Could it be true? Talbot is filled with doubt and disbelief. But the reappearance of one of the Stiletto's old enemies with a thirst for merciless revenge makes the story more than real and could imperil the life of not only the Stiletto, but her son and granddaughter as well.

“A thriller that brilliantly succeeds at that most difficult of authorial endeavors: blending the past and the present into a single compelling story. Filled with cutting-edge suspense, wry humor and heart-wrenching warmth, not to mention great period detail, The Black Stiletto will grab you instantly and simply not let go until the final page—no, make that the final sentence.”

24 FEBRUARY 2009
DARK SIDE OF THE MORGUE BY RAYMOND BENSON

Publication of Dark Side of the Morgue is a new book written by our friend, James Bond continuation author Raymond Benson.

Raymond comments:
"Dark Side of the Morgue is my second novel in a series of “rock ‘n’ roll thrillers,” is now available for pre-order and shipping at the end of February! Featuring a rock music industry private investigator named Spike Berenger, the book blends thriller elements, humor, and classic rock references to create what Ian Anderson (front man of the band Jethro Tull) called, “A frantic dash through the world of rock and roll. Thrills-a-plenty and backstage passes to the magical mystery musical twilight zone.”

DARK SIDE OF THE MORGUE, like its 2008 predecessor - A HARD DAY'S DEATH - skews the rock ‘n’ roll world into a very dangerous place and it’s up to the Rockin’ Security team to clean it up. This time, the story takes Spike and his sidekick Suzanne to Chicago to investigate a series of murders involving musicians. These victims make up a long line of progressive rock acts that have been kicking around Chi-town since the 60s. Loosely inspired by the “Canterbury” school of progressive rock that began in England in the mid-sixties (e.g. Soft Machine, Caravan, Gong, Hatfield and the North, Kevin Ayers, Robert Wyatt, etc.), these “Chicago Prog Bands” are entirely fictitious. Nevertheless, the story utilizes many real Chicago locations, mostly music clubs like Reggie’s, the Kinetic Playground, Schubas Tavern, and the Abbey Pub…all landmark spots for music lovers in the city.

Ultimately, though, the novel really is about “sex, drugs, and rock ‘n’ roll.” The book is a thriller and a murder mystery and a P.I. procedural—and it’s a bit darker than its predecessor. But tongue-in-cheek humor still abounds (again, there is a “Track Listing” instead of a “Table of Contents,” and “Liner Notes” instead of “Acknowledgments”), and there are plenty of references to rock trivia and cameo appearances by real rock stars.

DARK SIDE OF THE MORGUE was tremendous fun to write...and I hope you have a rockin' good time reading it!"

Reviews:
"Benson is a top-class thriller craftsman who knows showbiz and music like the back of his hand. An unbeatable combination." - Lee Child

"Spike Berenger is so real that I even tried looking him up in my address book in order to give him a call! Best rock read you will ever find!." - Rick Wakeman

"Book two in the Spike Berenger series is a riot. This time out Spike is involved in a series of murders in which the victims are all progressive rock musicians (or as the new term goes “Math Rock”). Spike’s security firm are called in and the people who could be next on the list are scared to death, of a dead woman. Benson’s writing here is full of insider music knowledge, which judging from the Rick Wakeman (keyboard player for Yes) blurb is authentic. Benson is a musician himself and he knows what he’s talking about. He also is a hell of a writer and this book moves faster than a Red Hot Chili Peppers concert. He keeps the suspense going right to the end and while keeping the action tight he still manages to toss in some humor and loads of fun. Raymond Benson is someone who should be on everyone’s must read list." - Jon Jordan, CRIMESPREE MAGAZINE

"DARK SIDE OF THE MORGUE is a terrific page-turner by one of the best thriller writers in the business!" - David Morrell, author of FIRST BLOOD

"DARK SIDE OF THE MORGUE assures Benson's place among the masters of the genre. A classic!" - J. A. Konrath, author of FUZZY NAVEL

"Filled with musical references, tongue-in-cheek humor and fast-paced action, DARK SIDE OF THE MORGUE is a must for fans of rock-n-roll and mystery investigations alike. Benson artfully encourages the reader to predict various possible outcomes with his expert prose and springs surprises around every corner." - Vicky Gilpin, FRESHFICTION.COM

Language: English
ISBN-10: 0843960639
ISBN-13: 978-0843960631
Dimensions: 6.7 x 4.2 x 1 inches

Reviews:
"A frantic dash through the world of rock and roll. Thrills a-plenty and backstage passes to the magical mystery musical twilight zone." - Ian Anderson of JETHRO TULL

"Former James Bond novelist Raymond Benson hits his stride with the release of the first book in his new Rock ‘n’ Roll Detective series. A Hard Day’s Death introduces Spike Berenger, a private investigator specializing in cases in the rock music industry. If Spike’s debut is any indication, here’s hoping he’s walking these mean musical streets of rock for many more cases.

A Hard Day’s Death begins with the murder of legendary rocker Peter Flame and the arrest of Flame’s estranged son, Adrian Duncan. Gina Tipton, Adrian’s mother and Flame’s first wife, hires Berenger to prove Adrian didn’t kill his father. During the course of the investigation, Spike’s path crosses Flame’s former and current band members, leaders of the fringe religious cult Flame had recently embraced, Flame’s second ex-wife and their son, and various record industry executives. In addition, a street gang currently running wild, selling drugs and performing guerrilla punk rock concerts, has added Spike to its hit list.

Spike works as a partner of Rockin’ Security, the top security business in rock. While the main businesses of the company is providing concert security and body guard services to rock stars, Spike runs the private investigation practice. This allows him to have a team of operatives, both on the streets and in the office. Spike’s team provides him with valuable information and support as he works to find evidence to clear Adrian.

Benson develops all his characters well, allowing the reader to get to know not only Berenger, but his team and those characters involved specifically with the case and unlikely to return in future books. In fact, Spike’s employees are so appealing, occasional short stories spotlighting them would be welcome.

There’s much for the rock music fan to enjoy, too. Benson peppers the book with many musical references, focusing mostly on classic rock. Fans of progressive rockers Yes and Gentle Giant will be especially pleased. Further, each chapter title is a song title. The song’s performer is also included, allowing the reader to imagine, or actually compile, the soundtrack Benson is imagining for his story. To cap off this rock ‘n roll mystery, there are cameo appearances by two real life rock stars.

Don’t miss this paperback original. Get in on the ground floor of this exciting new series. A Hard Day’s Death is highly recommended." - Neal Alhadeff, THE STRAND MAGAZINE

"...mystery fans who are also aficionados of classic rock will find the story line as evocative as it is entertaining. Benson's savvy use of musical icons (including David Bowie and John Lennon) as peripheral characters, as well as his use of songs and performers as chapter subtitles, make this an appealing read. With a core cast of realistic, well-developed and endearing characters, this budding series has a good shot at attracting and keeping a devoted reading audience." - Paul Goat Allen, CHICAGO TRIBUNE

"A sizzling story full of classic twists, humor, and a dead-on look at the music business. A HARD DAY'S DEATH is number one with a bullet." - Jeffery Deaver, author of THE SLEEPING DOLL

"Raymond Benson scores big with A HARD DAY'S DEATH, a rock and roll thriller that will make you feel like a real insider. Peter Flame is an aging star, once huge now on the downside of his career. After a mediocre performance he is found dead, at first an apparent suicide, but soon ruled a homicide. Spike Berenger and his Rockin' Security are determined to find out what happened, but with a list of suspects that read like liner notes to a prog rock album they have their work cut out for them. Benson has thoroughly nailed this book, it's fast and entertaining as hell and is every bit as perfect as a Carlos Santana guitar solo on a summer afternoon." - CRIMESPREE MAGAZINE Buzz Box Reviews

"A HARD DAY'S DEATH is the most fun you'll have reading a book this year. An exciting, compelling and often funny mystery, written by an industry insider." - J. A. Konrath, author of DIRTY MARTINI

"It is a fast paced novel full of rock tunes that will amuse and keep the interest intact of all rock lovers. The innovative part is that the chapters of the story are song titles. The author addresses religion and cult issues that are very interesting to read. The plot is well crafted and tight enough to grab the readers' interest, and the characters are realistic and well described. The dialogue sounds truthful and the language style is clear and simple. It is a good read that will entertain and educate readers as regards the rock stars era at the same time. It caters to mystery and crime lovers." - MIDWEST BOOK REVIEW
