Cold

First edition UK hardcover (1996)
UK paperback edition (2012)
In this white-knuckle 007 thriller, John Gardner leads master spy James Bond on a four-year search for terrorists in the skies - and into a deadly nest of doomsday killers.

The night that Flight 229 is torn apart at Washington's Dulles Airport, killing all 435 passengers aboard, a mission begins that will become an obsession for James Bond.

Who is responsible for destroying the aircraft? Was it a straightforward act of terrorism against a British-owned symbol? An assassination aimed at only one person? A ruthless attempt to put the airline out of business? For Bond, only one of the victims matters: his former lover and old friend, the Principessa Sukie Tempesta.

The search for Sukie's killers will turn out to be the most complex and demanding assignment of Bond's career. Across continents and through ever-changing labyrinths of evil, he follows the traces of clues into the centre of a fanatical society more deadly than any terrorist army. Its code name is COLD the Children of the Last Days. What he finds there is chilling indeed.

Seafire

First edition UK hardcover (1994)
UK paperback edition (2012)
A new Double-0 Section has risen from the ashes of the old British Secret Service. Now, the entire organisation has been split up and the Double-0 section reports to a small government committee called MicroGlobe One. Gone are the days when James Bond was answerable only to M. Gone also is the old licence to kill, for the new section's targets are not individuals but large corporations. Gone is the automatic pistol, replaced by the pocket calculator.

But weapons are reinstated when Bond is put on the trail of the self-made billionaire, Sir Maxwell Tarn, whose business empire spans the globe, and whose activities appear to include illegal dealing in weapons on a grand global scale.

With the shrewd assistance of Flicka von Grusse, 007 follows a maze of trails from London to Spain, Israel and Germany. But they are on board Tarn's floating laboratory off the coast of Puerto Rico when their own prey becomes their captor. There, Bond and Flicka realise their misstep has placed them squarely in the audience to a deadly experiment that will trigger ecological disaster of global proportions.

The fate of the oceans, not to mention their own lives, lies in stopping Tarn before his cache of deadly weapons destroys much more than a few pristine islands in the Caribbean.

Never Send Flowers

First edition UK hardcover (1993)
UK paperback edition (2012)
Illusion leads to murder as 007 pursues the wrong killer.

When Laura March, on leave from the British Security Service, is mysteriously murdered in Switzerland with a poison pellet shot from a powerful air rifle, James Bond and Swiss agent Fredericka "Flicka" von Grusse are called in to investigate. While at Laura's funeral, Bond notices among the wreaths a perfect white rose, its petals tipped blood-red and an ambiguous note wired to the stem. His investigation reveals an identical rose and note at the funerals of four high-profile personalities, all assassinated within a week. With no group claiming responsibility for the deaths, Bond focuses on Laura's case. He uncovers her recently dissolved love affair with the world-famous actor David Dragonpol, now an eccentric collector of theatre memorabilia living in a castle on the Rhine. Bond and Flicka go undercover to search the castle for clues, and in the garden find roses just like the ones at each of the funerals.

Their hybrid discovery leads to a harrowing manhunt in which the startling identity of the serial killer is revealed.

The Man From Barbarossa

First edition UK hardcover (1991)
UK paperback edition (2012)
Nobody could possibly have foreseen that the abduction of an old man in New Jersey would be the prelude to a drama played out on the world's stage.

Or that it was the first step in a plot so ingenious and skilful that the stability of nations would rock wildly to its adroit tune.

Or that around the world a name now indelibly associated with the horror of genocide - Babi Yar - would once again be headline news.

Or that soon an unlikely alliance would take place between the KGB, the Israeli Mossad, and the French and British Secret Intelligence Services.

And all because of an organisation hitherto unknown, the Scales of Justice.

For James Bond it meant a twist that no-one could have invented in their wildest dreams before the era of glasnost and perestroika - for this new assignment James Bond would not simply work with his former arch-enemy, the KGB, he would be operating under their control...

Then, summoned to San Francisco, Bond had learnt more about the mysterious Mr Lee and his underworld empire. Learnt about the five missing scientists and their ultra-secret work. He'd met his new and beautiful partner Chi-Chi.

Win, Lose, Or Die

First edition UK hardcover (1989)
UK paperback edition (2012)
The London Gazette announcement was brief: 'BOND, JAMES, Commander RNVR, Relieved of current liasion duties at the Foreign Office. Promoted to the substantive rank of Captain and returned to active service forthwith.'

The return of James Bond to the Royal Navy marks the intriguing backdrop to John Gardner's thrilling new adventure featuring Ian Fleming's celebrated hero.

Bond takes a refresher course and keeps up his flying hours by doing a conversion course on Sea Harriers. And eventually he learns that his mission is to serve in the Royal Navy's major aircraft carrier, HMS Invincible as minder to a phalanx of top brass British, American and - in this era of glasnost - Russian admirals, who are on board for a NATO exercise.

But why? Can a thrilling hi-jack by airborne troops (using hang-gliders) on a Japanese tanker, some time before, be connected?

Scorpius

First edition UK hardcover (1988)
UK paperback edition (2012)
Special Branch are not usually interested in dead bodies found floating in the Thames, except when the corpse is a young girl with an impeccable background when they become very interested indeed. So interested that they call on the legendary M, head of Secret Service.

In turn M sends for Commander James Bond, for the body has yielded two things of interest. First, the only telephone number in her diary is that of Bond; second, she is carrying a credit card which has never been heard of before on either side of the Atlantic.

Soon, Bond finds himself caught up in an unusual mixture of intrigue and mayhem involving a strange, but deadly, quasi-religious sect known as the Society of the Meek Ones; their leader the soft-spoken Father Valentine, who has links with the shadowy Vladimir Scorpius, nicknamed 'The King of Terror' because he is the largest arms dealer to various terrorist factions worldwide.

Naturally, with evil comes the good - the society girl, the Hon. Trilby Shrivenham, and an American IRS undercover agent, the gorgeous Harriet Horner. Good girls? Only time will tell.

Intrigue builds on intrigue and, as ever, Bond soon finds himself in the middle of a deadly game of terrorism and arms supplies. A game in which he is pitted against one of the most ruthless and sinister villains that Bond has ever encountered.

No Deals, Mr Bond

First edition UK hardcover (1987)
UK paperback edition (2012)
Between the Danish island of Bornholm and the Baltic coast of East Germany a nuclear submarine of the Royal Navy surfaces under the cloak of darkness. James Bond and two marines slip quietly from the forward hatch into their powered inflatable and set off for a lonely beach where they are to collect two young women who have to get out in their socks. Planted to seduce communist agents to run for cover in the West, they have been rumbled by the other side. Bond little knows that this routine exercise is but the prelude to a nerve-racking game of bluff and double bluff, played with consummate skill by his own chief M against the East German HVA and the elite branch of the KGB, formed out of Bond's old adversary SMERSH.

Over a plain lunch in the sober dining room in Blades, Bond learns of M's predicament. He cannot tell the police what he knows about the series of grisly murders of young women, found with their tongues removed, which occupy the day's headlines. Two of his undercover 'plants' have gone; Bond must find three others and conduct them to safety before they meet a similar fate. The first he spirits away from her Mayfair salon just as the next strike is made, taking her with him to the Irish Republic in pursuit of the second. But the urbane HVA boss, Maxim Smolin, is ahead of him this time, despite the astute ministrations of the Irish police. The KGB is soon on the scene, but nothing is at all what it seems, and Bond finds he needs all his wits to negotiate the labyrinth of double-crossing that is to lead him to a bewildering showdown in a remote corner of the Kowloon province of Hong Kong.

There, with only the trusted belt of secret weapons specially devised by Q branch, he has to fight a terrifying duel in the dark, with all the cards in the hands of his opponents.

Nobody lives forever

First edition UK hardcover (1986)
UK paperback edition (2012)
A cloud hung over James Bond as he negotiated the Bentley Mulsanne Turbo through the streets of Ostend at the start of a well-earned spell of leave. Rome was his destination, but first there was that worrying call from the Klinik Mozart, in the mountains south of Salzburg, to disturb his rest.

For more years than he cared to remember, his Scottish housekeeper had remained the one constant in his otherwise turbulent life. The two bronchial attacks May had suffered the previous winter had badly damaged her left lung, and had thrown 007 into a paroxysm of almost filial concern. First the Harley Street specialist and now convalescence in one of Europe's most expensive clinics had eased Bond's mind but had done nothing to still May's caustic tongue. If she refused to co-operate, she might not see her next birthday, Bond had been advised.

The incident on the cross-Channel ferry, when the vessel stopped while a search was made for a couple of sky-larking youngsters who, it was thought, had gone overboard, made him unaccountably jumpy. As, unobserved, he operated the secret panel in the dashboard to check his 9mm ASP automatic and the spare ammunition clips, and to withdraw the small Concealable Operations Baton in its soft leather case, he reflected on M's parting advice to be 'especially careful'. The sharp, steely look in his chief's eyes had given Bond the odd feeling that M had been deliberately hiding something from him.

It was just a few hours, rather than days, after disembarking at the Belgian port that the first grisly move was made in a bewildering game of cat-and-mouse, with Bond as the prey. What could be the purpose behind the personal vendetta unleashed by an assailant whom Bond, at first, failed miserably to identify?

Role Of Honour

First edition UK hardcover (1984)
UK paperback edition (2012)
James Bond abandons his 007 status, resigns from the Service, and heads south for Monte Carlo in his new Bentley Mulsanne Turbo in search of a new role of honour.

What brings about this extraordinary change of fortune in the life of the most celebrated blunt instrument the British Government has ever wielded? What unthinkable consequences will it have in the international game of cat-and-mouse played out so the rest of us can sleep safe in our beds?

Bond's legacy from his Uncle Bruce in Australia specifically requires him to spend the first £100,000 frivolously, on any sort of riotous living of his choice, within a given time. The choice is exercised partly by renewal of Bond's passion for that prince of cars, the Bentley. His departure from the Service requires rather more explanation. Questions in the House all revolved round a possible security leak, with Her Majesty's Opposition accusing the Minister of a cover-up. Bond's grievance is less that he should come under suspicion than that his honour is impeached by the manner in which the truth is exposed.

John Gardner's fiendish plot embroils Bond with a computer wizard absconding from his duties at the Pentagon, a sinister mercenary army training in secret for an audacious terrorist operation, and a hare-brained flight over Geneva while Summit Peace Talks are in progress there, before honour is fully restored.

Icebreaker

First edition UK hardcover (1983)
The first Swedish edition (1984)
UK paperback edition (2012)
Indestructible as ever, Bond is back in a third assignment from John Gardner - a deadly assignment undertaken in cohort with Bond's opposite numbers from the United States, the Soviet Union and Israel in the desolate Arctic wastes of Lapland. Yet if resurgent fascism is the common enemy, who is really to be feared? Can SMERSH be trusted to resist the temptation to seek vengeance on Bond? Is it the breezy American or the voluptuous Israeli who is acting as a double agent? Are the Finns merely using Bond to break the K.G.B.'s stranglehold on their tenuous national autonomy?

Never has Bond encountered such an unnervingly deceitful bunch of collaborators or been subject to such a bewildering series of potentially lethal shocks.

Licence Renewed

First edition UK hardcover (1981)
The first Swedish edition (1982)
Swedish pocket edition (1984)
Bond is back and he's better than ever. Miss Moneypenny thinks so. So does attractive Anna Reilly. And it's only a matter of time before Lavender Peacock, the beautiful ward of the Laird of Murcaldy, will heartily agree. Bond is drinking noticeably less spirits these days; he's perhaps more diligent about exercise and has a special low tar tobacco blended for his cigarettes at Morelands of Grovesnor Street. Political restraints are squeezing in on the Service. In M's words, 'There are moments when this country needs a trouble-shooter - a blunt instrument - and by heaven it's going to have one.'

One of these moments has indisputably arrived. There is something very ominous about the meetings (insufficiently investigated by M.I.5) between the international terrorist known as Franco and the renowned nuclear physicist who has dubiously inherited the title on Laird of Murcaldy - Dr Anton (not a well-known Scottish name) Murik. Someone must infiltrate the Laird's castle and only Bond could so deftly extract an invitation from Murik on Gold Cup Day at Ascot. Then with a Ruger Super Blackhawk 44 Magnum in its secret compartment and an impressive selection of Q's latest gadgetry ingeniously dispersed throughout his luggage, Bond points the Saab 900 Turbo (with a lower pollution level than a Bentley) towards the north-west Highlands and the fun begins.

The most famous spy in the world pits his nerve and cunning against a dangerously deranged opponent - one prepared to sacrifice most of the Western world to prove that only he can make it safe from accidental holocaust. As the seconds tick away on the valued Rolex Oyster Perpetual, the world comes nearer this ironic annihilation; Bond comes nearer a frightful death and ever nearer Miss Lavender Peacock.

"Constructed, scrutinised and checked with immense care; the story moves effectively; it's enjoyable. Ian Fleming would not be displeased." -Daily Telegraph
