FSWL contributor Steve Oxenrider met up with Yvonne Shima for the Designing 007 exhibition in Toronto in December 2012. Steve had previously interviewed Yvonne for Cinema Retro's special DR. NO tribute issue.
The Canadian-Japanese singer and actress moved to England in the late 1950s and performed in the West End in London. She had minor roles in several films before she was offered the role of Sister Lily, Dr. No’s cheerful, chatty receptionist on Crab Key.
Yvonne recalled working exclusively opposite Ursula Andress and Sean Connery (“very quiet…a real gentleman”), operating the mammoth copper door of the decontamination chamber on Ken Adam’s sets and her close friendship with Michele Mok, who played Sister Rose. A car accident in the late 1960's ended her career but Yvonne was excited to be ‘rediscovered’ for the 50th anniversary of DR. NO.
(Yvonne made her first public signing appearance at Autographica 19 in September 2013.)
