Since playing Ophelia in Hamlet at the Old Vic theatre 55 years ago, Dame Judi Dench has received wide critical acclaim for a career marked by outstanding performances in both classical and contemporary roles. She has won more than 25 awards - including 9 British Academy Awards - in a career that has encompassed the stage, television and motion pictures. She received the OBE (Order of the British Empire) in 1970 for services to the theatre, and subsequently became a DBE (Dame of the British Empire) in 1988. She is also awarded with a CH (Companion of Honour).

I have seen Dame Judi several times over the years, for example at the gala premieres in London of four of her Bond films:

The European premiere of The World Is Not Enough at the Odeon Leicester Square in 1999, the Royal world premiere of Die Another Day at Royal Albert Hall in 2002, the Royal Casino Royale premiere in 2006, and more recently at the world premiere of Skyfall at Royal Albert Hall on 23th October 2012.

Her other notable feature film credits include Mrs. Brown (1997) for which she won a Golden Globe and BAFTA awards as well as an Academy Award nomination, A Room with a View (1985) for which she won a BAFTA Award as Best Supporting Actress, A Handful of Dust (1988) which was another BAFTA Award-winning performance as Best Supporting Actress, and two films for Kenneth Branagh, Henrik V (1989) and Hamlet (1996).

Dench won an Academy Award, a BAFTA Award and was named Best Supporting Actress by the National Society of Film Critics for her performance in the hit romantic comedy Shakespeare in Love (1998). She was nominated for a Golden Globe Award and an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress in Lasse Hallström’s Chocolat (2000).

She also won a BAFTA Award for her performance in The Last of the Blonde Bombshells (2000) for Working Title Television. In 2001, she filmed Iris for which she received another Academy Award nomination, and The Shipping News (2001), again directed by Lasse Hallström.
